Chili Bombs?

I'm sure their were a few "chili grenades" that exploded at some frat parties with a bit too much beer back in the day, but this brings new meaning to the word.

Quote:
GAUHATI, India (AP) - The Indian military has a new weapon against terrorism: the world's hottest chili.
After conducting tests, the military has decided to use the thumb-sized "bhut jolokia," or "ghost chili," to make tear gas-like hand grenades to immobilize suspects, defense officials said Tuesday.
The bhut jolokia was accepted by Guinness World Records in 2007 as the world's spiciest chili. It is grown and eaten in India's northeast for its taste, as a cure for stomach troubles and a way to fight the crippling summer heat.

I'm not understanding how those peppers can be a cure for stomach troubles. Maybe if you're Indian and grew up on the damn things Then again, our parrots love them and never complain about stomach troubles

It has more than 1,000,000 Scoville units, the scientific measurement of a chili's spiciness. Classic Tabasco sauce ranges from 2,500 to 5,000 Scoville units, while jalapeno peppers measure anywhere from 2,500 to 8,000.

I wonder what the Scoville value is of the pepper used in pepper spray? That is only 2% for civilian use.

They've been using capsaicin for years in pepper spray and pepper grenades. Capsaicin is what makes the peppers hot, even the bhut jolokia. Its capsaicin isn't any hotter than other peppers' capsaicin. Bhut jolokia just has higher concentrations of it than other peppers. If they are going to use plain old bhut jolokia for pepper grenades, it'll be less powerful than the grenades that already exist using pure capsaicin. Perhaps they are just going to use bhut jolokia to extract capsaicin for use in ordinary pepper grenades. Either way, this is hardly news...
