Is China cheating?

from Drudgereport: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080814/...derage_chinese

BEIJING - Just nine months before the Beijing Olympics, the Chinese government's news agency, Xinhua, reported that gymnast He Kexin was 13, which would have made her ineligible to be on the team that won a gold medal this week.

In its report Nov. 3, Xinhua identified He as one of "10 big new stars" who made a splash at China's Cities Games. It gave her age as 13 and reported that she beat Yang Yilin on the uneven bars at those games. In the final, "this little girl" pulled off a difficult release move on the bars known as the Li Na, named for another Chinese gymnast, Xinhua said in the report, which appeared on one of its Web sites, http://www.hb.xinhuanet.com

The Associated Press found the Xinhua report on the site Thursday morning and saved a copy of the page. Later that afternoon, the Web site was still working but the page was no longer accessible. Sports editors at the state-run news agency would not comment for publication.

If the age reported by Xinhua was correct, that would have meant He was too young to be on the Chinese team that beat the United States on Wednesday and clinched China's first women's team Olympic gold in gymnastics. He is also a favorite for gold in Monday's uneven bars final.

Yang was also on Wednesday's winning team. Questions have also been raised about her age and that of a third team member, Jiang Yuyuan.

Gymnasts have to be 16 during the Olympic year to be eligible for the games. He's birthday is listed as Jan. 1, 1992.

Chinese authorities insist that all three are old enough to compete. He herself told reporters after Wednesday's final that "my real age is 16. I don't pay any attention to what everyone says."

Zhang Hongliang, an official with China's gymnastics delegation at the games, said Thursday the differing ages which have appeared in Chinese media reports had not been checked in advance with the gymnastics federation.

"It's definitely a mistake," Zhang said of the Xinhua report, speaking in a telephone interview. "Never has any media outlet called me to check the athletes' ages."

Asked whether the federation had changed their ages to make them eligible, Zhang said: "We are a sports department. How would we have the ability to do that?"

"We already explained this very clearly. There's no need to discuss this thing again."

The International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) has said repeatedly that a passport is the "accepted proof of a gymnast's eligibility," and that He and China's other gymnasts have presented ones that show they are age eligible. The IOC also checked the girls' passports and deemed them valid.

A May 23 story in the China Daily newspaper, the official English-language paper of the Chinese government, said He was 14. The story was later corrected to list her as 16.

"This is not a USAG issue," said Steve Penny, president of USA Gymnastics

And why wouldn't they? They have this backwards-ass corrupt system over there. Seems like they would do anything concievable to come out on top of the rest of the world.

I don't see it as a big deal even if they are lying about their ages... If they are younger, and can beat the people REALLY eligable, then I say they deserve it! I don't see how being 14 instead of 16 can really be an advantage...

That's kind of harsh.

I was reading about how one of the chinese girls is like 62 lbs... being that light definitely has advantages in gymnastics over someone who has 2 years more of puberty/growing and weighs 80-90 lbs.

Yes, I think so.

I thought the olympics might be good for China, but I don't think it woke them up at all.

They pulled the opening ceremonies girl for her buck-teeth.

Their gymnasts are suspiciously young.

Finally, Chinese officials and their security cronies made the men's cycling competitors remove their oxygen masks during pre-race warmups, so that when the TV cameras filmed them, China wouldn't look bad.

If they are cheating or not, I think they have some moral evaluating to do.

But of course

As if anyone on the planet is not aware that all 'olympic athlete$' since the late 60s have been bred in zero-gravity test-tube uber-secret underground facilties designed to run rings around normal humans, and then they ALL cheat to come anywhere near one another. The spectators are cheating for crying out loud. I cheated in this post.

I trust our expert in Asian chicks, mr. Maki. China probably is cheating in some way or another, but I think forging a gymnasts age is one of the smallest offences in these games by any country. I bet there's a scandal or two brewing..

I don't think China is going to get caught, though - they've put too much effort in the Games to show the world a positive image, so I bet if they get caught with something big, some heads are going to roll, in the very literal sense. Of course everyone is trying to catch them from something, since it's the red China, and everyone knows those commie bastids can't be trusted.

Yes, you're right... because we all know a couple of individuals who took it upon themselves to break the rules is exactly the same thing as a possible attempt by a country's Olympic committee to knowingly commit fraud.

BMC is Canadian btw, if it matters.

Personally, I think its terrible that these governments take a 4 year old child and make them into an "Olympian Machine". Whatever happened to choice?

Oh yeah, this is Communist China (which isn't REALLY Communist BTW).
