Christmas - only in California!

We went to the beach today to take the dogs and ourselves for a walk in the beauty that is the Pacific Coast.
After tiring the dogs out, we drove a bit further to Ano Nuevo beach and walked down - just us humans, no dogs.
We saw 4 elephant seals basking on the beach. Huge creatures, and you do well to give them a wide berth, but they are beautiful and it's incredible to see them.
Cell phone pic, wife and son in the background.

Merry Christmas, y'all

Good thing you didn't bring the dawgs.
Love that area anytime of the year. Jealous. Just a bit.
Merry and a Happy.

Santa Cruz is SoCal? Did the coast move that far down since I've been to SC last time?

Damn earthquakes...

Nope, we're still in the middle of the state...
Though we do think about moving farther form San Jose. But the Sharks are too good to leave - the only good sports thing happening in the whole Bay Area.

They look pretty dead. They bask like that. First time you see them, you think "geez, that's a huge dead seal".
Then you notice that they're breathing...
Or you don't notice, and you get close (or you think that your hippie UC Santa Cruz vibe makes you an Animal Friend, as one hippie youth we saw did), and approximately 3 tons of p.o'd bull elephant seal lunges at you. They can move awfully fast for short distances. And they are large and can be quite nasty tempered.

I started to go a bit closer (still not *too* close) to that one to take another pic, and he opened his eyes and looked at me. I decided I didn't really need a better picture.
Just wished I had a real camera - telephoto would have been my friend.
