If the condensate lines get clogged and back up, the pan will start to fill, trigger the float switch, and shut the A/C down. It basically prevents the situation you're in now.

We would pour a quarter cup of good old Clorox bleach into our condenser drain once a month, because the primary cause at the time (in Louisiana) was algae growth blocking the drain. Algae no likey bleachy.....

They came out and told us our drain pain was toast. They also told us it was time to replace the whole heat pump. We got a second opinion. The 2nd guy showed us the bleach trick and wasn't going to charge us. He said the unit was fine. I was so grateful for his honesty I wrote him a check for his trouble.
