How do you clean them out? I can see the pipe going to the floor drain, but I'm not sure what to look for inside the unit.

Our air handler resides in a large plastic pan, that has a float switch in it. If the condensate lines get clogged and back up, the pan will start to fill, trigger the float switch, and shut the A/C down. It basically prevents the situation you're in now.

at work if the drain gets clogged we hook a wetvac to the end and clear the blockage. it's usually an accumulation of dust and dirt and not really solid. but once / twice a year we drop the pan and clean it fully.

Yup, been there, done that, had a whole new wood floor reinstalled...

We would pour a quarter cup of good old Clorox bleach into our condenser drain once a month, because the primary cause at the time (in Louisiana) was algae growth blocking the drain. Algae no likey bleachy.....

Been there as well! A little bleach keeps it nice and clean. The first time it happened we called an A/C repair company. They came out and told us our drain pain was toast. They also told us it was time to replace the whole heat pump. We got a second opinion. The 2nd guy showed us the bleach trick and wasn't going to charge us. He said the unit was fine. I was so grateful for his honesty I wrote him a check for his trouble.

Yes, it was a fail. Luckily I caught it in time, but very wet boiler room and surrounding carpet. Had to cut the PVC drain line out and flush it and all this crap came out. Problem fixed, but I wish I had done it sooner. The wet vac solution works well, I heard (on YouTube).
