Cleaned out my aunt's burned out apartment today

I just got back from a horrendous job. My father and my brother and I had to move the salvageable furniture and other items out of the apartment that my great aunt lived in up until Christmas Eve when the fire that took her life destroyed most of the stuff. She was 98 years old and obviously lived a long life but that's a horrible way to go. She dropped a lit oil lamp on the bathroom floor and it shattered. By the time they could break open the door to her apartment (she kept it locked because she was afraid of being burglarized), the entire room was on fire. The owner of the apartment complex said it would cost 240,000 dollars to fix the damage.

I almost threw up when I opened the bathroom door and looked inside. There was a professional clean-up crew that was waiting for us to get finished so they could put on their gear and start ripping out the walls and carpet and other stuff. I just took two showers and I still have the smell of burnt plastic and burnt everything else in my nose.

Today officially sucked ***.

RIP. great aunt Bertha.

That sucks. Sorry to hear that you had to do cleanup. Not a fun task.

I had to clean the bathroom at a classmate's grandfather's house when her grandma commtted suicide. I was there when they removed the body. I asked the police who cleans up the mess, they told me that there was a hazmat company that would do it for $4500, or they could do it themselves. Cause of death for grandma was a GSW to the head. Her family was very poor, they could not have afforded that option, and I couldn't let my classmate go in there and clean up the bathroom, so I asked the cops there for some gloves, got them, went into the kitchen and got some sponges and some bleach, and locked myself in the bathroom to proceed with the chore. It sucked. I'll never forget it. To this day, I have flashbacks whenever I clean my tub.

Sorry for your loss, that is a horrid way to go.
