CLEANING.

You know you have nothing to do when you create a thread about it. Anyway, I never realized how much useless crap is in this house. It's my parents' mind you, still livin' with them y'see, but still. Even my tiny hidey hole known as my room has so much crap in it! I have no idea how the heck it happens, but for some reason we just seem to accumulate stuff.

Just did a huge amount of junkchuckin' and now I'm tired as hell. It's definitely improved, but I still have a buncha stuff in the closet. Old school pants. I go to a Catholic school unfortunately, and they make us wear uniforms. Also unfortunately, you tend grow over the course of four years when you're only a little seabud. But bloody hell, I have a whole PILE of uniform pants.

Found a bunch of stuff too, though. I found a lot of comic things I used to draw when I was like nine years old. I was such a stupid and immature kid. But weren't we all at one point? Most of us at least. That was all tossed. I found this cool metal box thing that I'm using for extra strings and various tools for maintainance.

I don't want to be the poor sucker who has to clean out the garage. My stepfather, nice guy, but he's a hoarder unfortunately. So we've got towers upon towers of boxes full of crap that'll likely never see the light of day for a very long time.

Little story/rant. Felt like talking about it. I'm sure at least one of you must be able to identify with my cleaning perdicament! Post your cleaning stories and rants here, I guess.

It was like that at my folks old house.

The thing that really shunted us into clearing out all the junk was moving.

Well, I ended up taking most of my junk to my flat and, well, not looking forward to ever having to move from here

Would never throw the old stuff out tho, drop it off at charity shops or try and sell it at a car boot sale/garage sale, in private listings or on the internet.

I come from a farming background, which means that nothing is ever thrown away, instead you keep it on the off chance that it will oneday come in handy or have some salvageable parts on it you need.

My grandparents place which is still on the farm has quite literally hundreds of old broken cars/truck/tractors/slashers/seeders and god knows what other farm machinery, as well as old TVs, fridges, washing machines and anything else you could imagine. Being about 6km from the ocean 90% of it is rusted beyond recognition, but its good fun if you are up for a bit of smashing.

Sounds like my house... we probably only use or need about 10% of the junk in here. We try to purge annually and donate the remainder to a charity that will sell it for us. Most of our junk won't go in yard sales in our area, so we won't even bother.

My garage on the other hand is a hell hole. The first 10' or so is reserved for Harley parking, mine and my dad's. The rest is a hodgepodge of worthless junk that needs to be gone through.

I have too much stuff and it has reached the point where managing it is becoming a problem.

You sell things out of the boot(trunk) of your car?

Im guessing it's something you don't really get in the US then?

You take your car, loaded with junk to a pre-organised sale, you basically get a parking space in a big lot, set up stall and sell.

Mohawk, that's a great concept- I don't think anyone in the states does it. If I get them going over here I will give you full credit for the idea.
@MyWifeBoris: My advice to you is to shake this habit off hard now- otherwise you'll be buried by adulthood. Here's my garage:

It's much better now, but I still can't get a single car into it(it's a 3-car space). The full story of how it got this way would be a huge derail- maybe I'll throw out a thread on it as a PSA warning against the pitfalls of hoarding.

I'll stay from sticking up a picture of my folks garage (and that's AFTER moving house!). Needless to say, yours looks neat and organised by comparison!

I don't deserve any credit, just a fairly common thing over here. Something else I take for granted as happening in other parts of the world:

Most people will have garage sales and will sell their old stuff from their own driveway. Of course these are becoming rare things these days because of Ebay, but on occasion you'll see a neighborhood garage sale.

I _love_ de-crappifying houses. I wouldn't mind doing it as a living. I remember the day I decided to leave my parents house, filling up the garbage can with bags of ****, and filling up the truck with bags of **** for goodwill. It was very satisfying.

Now our place is very low on crap, I still have a mountain of paperwork, but am working to go paperless on as many accounts as possible.

I need to go through the closet and eliminate some clothes and shoes, as well as miscellaneous guitar/bass/electronics pieces that will never be used

I was aware garage sales were more common in the US (even mentioned it in an earlier post). The great thing with a car boot sale, even tho you can't take as much stuff, you get to go through other folks junk too.

So, I dare say it can end up being counter productive in some ways

Interesting Trivia: The Simpsons' animation has been a paperless workflow for a few years now.

Ah okay, yeah we do have some of those. I thought meant actually standing around the car with the boot open selling things to passers by.

That's a really fun-looking space. Nothing to be ashamed of there.

I foresee a "show us your man cave" thread in the future. But wait until I get mine unpacked and set up first ...

My cave is a small opening carved out of a small rock with a spoon.

I really need my own place. e_o

every 6 months (spring, then late fall) our household requires "The great purge". Be it the basement, or the attic, or simply our closets / dressers...so much deemed unneeded, it boggles the mind. How it ever fit in my modest 1500 sq. ft. home boggles the mind even further. I donate and get receipts and write it off on taxes.

I envy you guys with garages and finish-able basements... I have tried to get a permit to build a shoppe on my property, but the way my house sits on the lot and the proximity of my neighbors only leaves me to build it dead-center in my yard, no freakin go. Time to move.

NOT in my neck of the woods- there was a good dozen on the right side of the tracks this morning.
