Howdy!
My daughter has to go to the Cleveland Clinic in late March for a second opinion on her epilepsy, and because she'll be stuck in the hospital most or all of the time, we won't be able to do fun stuff like the Rock and Roll HOF or go to bass stores or anything like that.
However, we will have a car, and I'm thinking we're going to get REALLY sick of the hospital cafe food in short order.
So do any Cleveland TBers have recommendations for good places to eat (we'll likely have to do take out) that are reasonably (within a couple miles) close to the Cleveland Clinic? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
I do know that the nearest Waffle House (my daughter's favorite place to eat) is quite a ways away, but we'll be making that journey a few times for sure. |

That area of town can be pretty tricky to navigate even with a GPS unit. Also be aware that there are some pretty rough neighborhoods near by, so go over your directions well before departing.
There's a great Chinese place called Bo Loong fairly close by: http://cleveland.citysearch.com/prof...estaurant.html
Also Slymans (best corned beef in town): http://cleveland.citysearch.com/prof...estaurant.html
Pizza: http://cleveland.citysearch.com/prof..._pizzeria.html
Browse the Citysearch site for other places. Keep in mind you're only 10 min. from downtown so that opens up a lot more options.
All the best to you and your daughter, and be assured that the Cleveland Clinic has the best doctors in the world so she's in good hands.

There's a place called the West Side Market near there that's open a few days a week- it's an Old World-style open market and there are vendors selling hot foods/breads to take out. My favorite brats in the world are from there- I'd kill for a couple hot ones from Frank's Brats right now. It's also fairly close to the Tower City mall, which has a bunch of food court-type places. There was a Bennigans across from there when I lived there, but I doubt if it's still there. When we were at the Clinic, I mostly just ate from the McDonalds that's in the cafeteria, but who wants that if they have the choice to drive |

You are not far from the Great Lakes Microbrewery, though, which is a great place to eat (and drink!).
Best of luck to your daughter, of course! |

Little Italy - Mama Santa (best pizza) or Trattoria (pasta).
Great Lakes Brewing Company - best brewery in NE Ohio, good eats
might be a little further than 15 minutes.
Tremont area - Lolitas, Fat Cats, Lago, etc, etc. (fancy eats)
If you are stopping by the Waffle House in Eastlake (Vine St.), that is my neck of the woods. Can try to meet up with you if interested. |

We're in the Clinic with Shenandoah the wonder dog who has charmed the staff. She's a true champ, and working HARD.
My daughter has had an MRI and a PET scan, and yesterday they hooked her up to an EEG machine. This involved me holding her down for 90 minutes while she screamed bloody murder and tried to escape while I tried to hold her head perfectly still without hurting her or touching the sides or top of her head so they could attach the leads. I felt like I'd fought a bear when we were done. Good thing bass players have strong fingers or I don't think I could have done it.
Now we're in the bizarre position of hoping for a seizure. They've already taken her off some of her meds.
We've managed to find some decent food right here at the Clinic as RS pointed out. The Clinic is very nice but off campus is depressing -- everything seems shuttered and depressed. Given my daughter's situation and the lay of things, I think we'll stay on campus and just eat here -- I don't want to be away from her if I can avoid it. |

How long will you be at the Clinic?
East Cleveland is very depressed (East 17th-185th street). Most of the big companies headquartered in Cleveland have left over the past 20 years for cheaper labor and less tax heavy pastures. Cleveland Clinic and Progressive are the last large employers in town, really.
When I was working down there for a week, I ate La Salsa happily every other day. And kids always love McDonalds.
Let me know if I can do anything to help or if you need any other info.

I can't imagine how difficult this must be for you, your daughter, and your whole family, but I will keep you all in my thoughts and prayers. You also have my most profound admiration. You're a good man, Bart, and like a good player, you're doing what it takes in a support role.
Best wishes, Tom. |

Best wishes, Tom. | Thanks so much, Tom. You're too kind. I'm just trying to do whatever I can to keep my girl happy yet get as much information as we possibly can while we're here.
The Clinic is a seriously impressive place. We're sort of hospital experts by this point, and I've been amazed. Kira is a really difficult case though -- I'm hopeful that we'll get some good advice, but I wouldn't be surprised if we leave here with no more answers than we came with. Neurology is a science that's still in its infancy. Still, I'd feel like we will have been to one of the finest hospitals in the world regardless of the outcome.
RS, thanks for all your help. We'll be here until Wednesday unless they can't get her seizures back under control after they've started, in which case we might be here longer.
As nice as the people here are, I can't wait to get back home to my own bed and my new Will Lee.
We've been very happy with the food options here. I had no idea this place was so freakin' big. It's like a city all to itself. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
