Last night, my suitemates went out and broke into two condemned dormitories on campus which are currently undergoing asbestos abatement. They brought back some couch cushions with them. Hooray mesothelioma!

-Mike | I took a walk down to those dorms today and looked around the outside. There were notices that the asbestos abatement was completed back in June of this year. Is it possible that the furniture my suitemates brought back was contaminated? I would imagine they would've taken the furniture out before performing the abatement, then put it back in after it was decontaminated.

We'll know in a few months if you suddenly stop posting that it was contaminated after all.

| | | I realize the unlawfulness of trespassing/stealing the cushions is bad, but my biggest concern at this point is my health/safety. They refuse to get rid of the cushions, despite the fact that there's probably toxic material imbedded in them. I don't want to risk my health for others' stupidity.

Wait until they're both out for awhile and then take the cushions for a ride to a dumpster somewhere.
When they come back and ask about the cushions, disavow any knowledge. Then suggest that perhaps someone came in and stole them.

Are you a random, who gets tossed into one room or another each semester? All you need to do is make friends with a couple of guys and room with them - problem solved. Actually, your room mates sound pretty cool and I'd be down for taking your place if I were still going to college. |

I'm mad that they brought this crap back. Why did you even bother replying to this thread if all you were going to do was imply that I have no friends and that I have some major personality flaw? Don't you think bringing asbestos-contaminated items into the house is a health risk? You're supposedly a medical student right, so you tell me.

As far as the risk is concerned, to be on the safe side it wouldn't be a bad idea to throw them out. But there shouldn't be too many fibers embedded in the material; you could wash them and they would probably be OK. Just don't inhale air through the cushions!
Most people who get mesothelioma or asbestosis had serious asbestos exposure. My grandfather who died of mesothelioma had major exposure in the navy, and in a few of his other jobs. However all of us have low grade exposure from the environment, so I doubt a tiny trace amount in a few couch cushions is going to elevate your risk of mesothelioma in any significant way. But if you don't throw them out, you should definitely clean them as well as you can. |

I seriously wouldnt be taking any risks at all tho, a single fibre of asbestos is enough to kick it all off!
