Very interesting. I had no idea. I'll have to bring this up to my hockey friends. [I find hockey kinda boring.]

The part on the short goalie departing from the "stand up" style was a neat little anecdote. The fact that they played an offensive style instead of a physical/rough style of hockey I find noteworthy.
Also realize that the CHL was founded in 1894 and the NHL wan't founded until 1917 to the extent of segregation I cannot comment cept to say that it wasn't until 1958 that O'ree broke the color barrier and it wasn't until 1974 that another black player was drafted by an NHL team. (according to wiki)
There are currently (also according to wiki) 17 black players in the NHL. Wiki may not be accounting for a few who have retired but off the top of my head I can think of Jerome Iginlia, Kevin Weekes (retired), Mike Grier, Donald Brashear (ret. form the NHL), Evander Kane, Dustin Byfuglien, George Laraque (ret.) and PK Subban; and there may be a lot more black players up and coming in developmental leagues that I'm unaware of.
I also want to point out that I think the Hockey HOF would do well to recognize the original CHL if they haven't already (this vid is obviously older since Hartnell doesn't play for the Preds [as noted in the ticker injury report at the bottom towards the end of the vid] He was traded to the Flyers in '07). It's the hockey HOF,...not the NHL HOF and all founding and originating leagues deserve recognition no matter what the ethnic make up of the league. |

Which is why I always cite when I reference wiki for any "facts" that I'm gathering so the reader can make their own assumptions as to the validity of the "facts".
I find it's good source to get a rough idea but in the back of mind I tell myself,...well it's only wiki. The article they had on the CHL was literally a paragraph long,...which I think speaks to the lack of recognition the CHL gets.
FWIW I reference the article on Willie O'ree and that's the article that mentioned 17 black players currently in the league ("as of the mid 2000's [so does that mean 2050? 2500?)
