I see so much of it these days and it sort of leaves me wondering: why? Also when? And finally who? Some rhetorical questions at the end.
Why is there so much communication on internet chat forums using images that contain witty captions? I know when I joined TB there was no such thing but not it is ubiquitous. Crazy mid-air cats, facepalming gorillas, William Shatner and on and on. Lots of cartoons too. Why is this used in place of typed language? When did this start? And finally who comes up with all these or do you guys just make them as you go? Im confounded.
Could this be related to the degradation of our moral fabric as a society? Is not only music dead but communication with words as well? Is it racist? Is it possible that in the future we will supplant face to face communication with mobile electronic devices showing pictures of cats in action with custom witty captions?

This is especially true if the person is a poor communicator. A picture, however, can clarify an idea or help make sure they are understood correctly. A picture of a face can leave little doubt as to what is being shown/felt/experienced. It's a tool in the modern mode of communicating, nothing more. Like slang, if you will. |

| | | | Most of the time I find it funny. But when someone posts a picture of a giant, laughing pear with the caption "LOL WUT" in the middle of a serious and thoughtful exchange, I consider it a cop-out. It means they don't have a worthy thought to add, so they opt for a cheap laugh. They should just have the decency to bow out of the conversation. |
