Slow the #### down!
I commute on my little Ninja daily, rain or shine, but when I need to run errands in my hood to get groceries, equipment, ammo, etc., I use my Nissan Xterra (which is rare)... This is a mid size SUV not really great on MPG, so I tend to drive slow and keep it under 2000rpm.
One thing I noticed on my way to get some stuff at a couple of stores (to get groceries and some wrapping stuff for Maki's beer ):
From a stop light, people accelerate really fast... cars were passing me ONLY TO BEAT ME TO THE NEXT STOP LIGHT! Are they stupid? Is it a race? Hard acceleration really lowers your MPG, so why did they do it? Does this mean their bitching rights for high gas prices should be revoked? I guess in a sense, I want the gas prices to go up even higher, maybe it'll cause people to use their brains when they use their vehicles.
There were 7 traffic lights and each one every one took off like a bat outta' hell... and who comes creepin' up in his truck? Me.
I think we all need to think about this a little more closely, what good is it doing you to beat each other to the traffic light?
Why am I posting this?
I don't know.

Hmmmm... bummer...
...prices go higher and higher but traffic remains just as ridiculous as ever!! |

Man, I am in no way in a rush to get to work...and my driving reflects that...hahaha |

On the flip side, I prefer that people at least drive the speed limit. Folks who drive like they're worried they'll break the rubber band holding their engine together (I'm talking 10-15 mph UNDER here) drive me nuts.

Turn in your license, you are a road hazard.

But I've always been sensible about it. I just enjoyed opening it up at green lights and hear the motor roar.
Now I have a car and gas prices are crazy high so I drive hella slow and make sure never to accelerate too much. I also employ several gas saving techniques (not driving during rush hours, letting the accelerator go if I see a red light in front of me, etc.)
The amount of people passing me at crazy speeds is mind numbing. I had a guy overtake me by going on the shoulder a few days ago: it was a scary @ss exeperience, especially since there was a bike ahead riding. I've had a lot of SUVs, big rigs even police cruisers overtake me in the past week alone. What are people thinking ? And I drive the speed limit, I'm not doing 30 mph in a 65 mph zone: I still get morons and inbreeders who tailgate me in their rundown Blazer or Soccers moms who are oblivious to the outside world in their Escalade.
As a society, we really need to check our ego at the door before taking the wheel, it'll be better for gas savings and security. If you can't spare 4-5 minutes on a daily commute, I sure hope you can spare as much as 60-70 miles per fill. I you can't, stop whining.
PS: I'm really thinking about putting a "2 SLOW 4 U" sticker on my rear bumper. |

I started setting my cruise control at 62 mph (limit is 60 here) for my work commute which is about a 35 minute trip at that speed.
I get BLOWN AWAY on the freeway!!!!! People are zooming around me like I am standing still..and yes, i am in the rightish lane...not all the way right cuz of people getting on the freeway.
MPG goes way down above 55 mph.
Really, is getting to work or wherever 5 minutes earlier THAT important? leave your house earlier then!
I'm old...and gas is expensive

| | | Cruise control keeps me in line.....watching all the people fly by somehow makes the gas pedal keep going down. I set it to 5 over and go...... and 5 over because every time I pass one of those "Your speed is....." flashy thingies it's always 3 mph under my speedometer
I've also started taking the long way home simply because I don't have to hit the brake pedal every block.
However......if you're going 10mph under the speed limit I'm gonna be the person behind you pulling out their brain (nice saying) because errrr the sign says 45 not 35!!! And if you don't know where you are going, don't drive during rush hour! I hate that And don't get me going on the person on their cell phone in the left lane going under the speed limit while the traffic piles up behind them.....with gramps in the right lane so you can't go around.......
