We just moved into a new place with about 2500 sq ft of back yard which the previous occupant had completely abandoned. I've been hacking at the jungle and pulling up broken paving slabs to clear it out and we're just starting to replant the bottom half now. Put down some sod to get a lawn up fast and started on a small herb garden. Once the back is clear we'll start on veggies and some hops for my brewing.

It's a lot of work, but cheaper than a gym membership.

I do. If you have any horses/barns/stables near go get the manure. Layer your manure, vegetable matter, etc. (some are pro grass clippings, some are not). You want to make a compost "lasagna". Give it a few days, then turn the whole mess w/ a pitchfork. Start a new layer. Repeat.

Watch it to make sure it doesn't get too hot.

We've been making our own dirt for about a year, and our tomatoes are huge and delicious.

i heard peeing on it helps the process, not recommended if you are planning on eating anything grown from your compost.

i also that sharing a beer with your heap is good too. i tried to test this but forgot to share.

Unpacked her *quick composter* & had a quick look- might not be too bad. It looks like you add the crap in the top and pull it out the bottom after it decomposes a bit.

hooray! i have been meaning to start a gardening thread.

i love to garden but have a shading yard. this year i got access to a sunny spot across the street. i have been growing lots. it helps that my gf is a serious gardener.

ok, first, compost. there are plenty of great books and resources. the number one rule is, "compost happens." it will become compost no matter what. however, if you have a time frame in mind, like 6 weeks or so, then you have to make some effort. those bins help speed things up. i used to be serious about my composting (just a pile in the yard, but well layered and mixed regularly). ironically, now that i spend so much time gardening, my composting is just me throwing scraps in a pile in an out-of-the-way spot in my yard. it will happen, but it looks pretty nasty.

however, my garden has been supplying great food for months now. i have been thru radishes, lettuces, chard, kohlrabi, and cukes. i am currently getting zukes, maters, taters, peppers, and basil. my pumpkins and runner beans are next.

woo hoo!

thank you, so that's what my problem is. I've been throwing veg scraps into a pile in the middle of the yard. I'll move it to the shade

Well, we have a marvelous crop of maggots so far. It's amazing how much useable stuff we generate every day- I keep a large salad-type bowl on the kitchen counter & usually have it full of new material for the outside bin by the end of the day. Haven't used any of the end product yet.

Living in a condo I dont have the room for a compost heap, though we did plant a small veggie garden. We've got some awesome heirloom tomato plants, some sweet basil, and my Mammoth Jalapeno plant is getting really big!

Oh benevolent heap, we seek your wisdom!

Horse manure and seaweed infusion "tea" ftw.

And it appears that signing up on a bass forum to advertise your composting tools is a big waste of time, sadly, but no way round it.

The wife is into vermicomposting.

Compost - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I'm not really sure of the details but here is a disgusting picture of the worms (be glad I don't post pics of our colony of Blaptica Dubias [cock roaches].

The Garden.

This is our first attempt at a vegetable garden so there will be some success but there are bound to be some failures. It's only started to get warm in this part of the world so the growing season has started a bit late. We've got a ways to go before harvest so hopefully these guys will have plenty of time to grow.

We've got beets, radishes, lettuce, purple potatoes, tomatoes, raspberries, strawberries, different squashes, cucumbers, sage, thyme, peppers, onions....and a few more that aren't coming to mind.

What the flip are you posting about? I'm not quite awake yet, but I see no one *advertising* anything.
Correct me if I'm wrong, though- I'm a pretty impulsive consumer & would love to help kick-start the economy back to life.
On topic, I finally pulled a whole bunch of the bottom layer out of our 'poster yesterday- VERY black & wormy. Wifey wants to try the Deat Star-looking black ball, which I'm OK with- the big box makes mixing/turning/harvesting the schlop tricky.

Edit: warwick.hoy, those pics give my taste buds a boner

Always garden, usually fight it and lose.

Having hand surgery is stopping it cold this year.

We're starting to eat our lettuces, our spud box is crazy big, and we'll have some jumbo pumpkins this year.
