Question Compressor for spray gun

Sign in to disble this ad
Ive been finishing furniture for a long time, but have never got my own guns. well now Im looking into Devilbliss or an Iwata gravity sprayer. Reason be, is that I got a contract to finish some tables and the gun I had to use was less than on par and a good gun would have made this easier. So the question is....

what type and gal compressor do I need to run a gun without coming up short... you know if i want to spray a 10 foot long table thats 4 foot wide with stain I dont want the gun crapping out on me 3/4 of the way through.

Most of the setups I have used have been big industrial systems so Im kinda lost when it comes to smaller portable comp And I would like to keep the cost of the comp $600 and under.

Work backwards...

Settle on a couple of models, & look at the specs. Find out what the gun requires by way of air feed - it'll be something like X.Y CFM (cubic feet/minute). Source a compressor that'll feed this with a bit of headroom.

If need be, start out by renting. That way you can try several different-sized comps & see what works for you, then start scouring the classifieds or CL.

Iwata stuff is really good - I've got two of their airbrushes, fantastic things. Can't say about DeVilbiss, other than they're pretty much the original spray gun.

Pete.

Check out some Accu-spray stuff. They have a system that is available called the whirlwind that has its own air supply unit, and utilizes HVLP technology........ Aside from that I wouldn't go with anything smaller than say a 5hp compressor.

^ That's it right there. You might want to look into an air drill or a sander and spec out a compressor that will run one of those too.

Good call. An air sander is a massive boon if you're refinishing, plus you can use 'em wet without being killed to death. They do like a lot of air though.

Minimally I'd say 5 hp and a 60 gallon tank.
