Watching the Jeopardy IBM challenge...they have a super-computer playing against two of the most successful human players ever...so far the computer's winning...this is so hilarious to me right now

While the computer has a big advantage because of its knowledge base and speed of information access, at times it looked like the human contestants were holding back for whatever reason. I didn't think the questions were all that tough (although some were), I even answered a couple of them before Watson! I was impressed with the computer, but only to a point.

The thing that irritates me the most is how much time they waste talking about "Watson". They waste so much time that they can only get in one round in a 30 minute show. Just get on with it. I'll be glad when they get back to 3 fallible human beings ready to duke it out...

And yea, a computer can send an electrical signal to trigger the buzzer much faster than a human brain can tell the thumb to squeeze...so in that respect it was kinda rigged...makes me wonder what the computer was doing those few times the other guys got a word in (prolly a hiccup due to downloading/installing a few critical system updates? )

I don't trust IBM anyway after seeing the documentary about Kasparov vs. Deep Blue

The big deal here is not the fact that Watson has such a huge database and can answer just about any question, the big deal is how it can understand and answer those questions and give the right answer to the right question in the first place. The very first test run done in front of Jeopardy producers was almost a complete bust because it kept misinterpreting questions in odd ways that the human players had no trouble understanding. Only after tweaking it somewhat and a second audition where it did much better were they able to convince the producers it was a viable contestant. As I said, you need to check out the Nova special before you start making premature claims as to how the game is "fixed".

Regards, C.Linton!
