Computer help and suggestions needed

Sign in to disble this ad
Ok computer folks... This is a combo thread, one thing i have a problem with, the other i need suggestions for.

1. I just installed a new mobo/processor/ram into my computer and reformatted my main HD. When i listen to music now (running firewire --> my outboard recording interface/ onboard sound disabled) it lags when i scroll down on pages. This never happened with my pervious setup and all my drivers are up to date. Any idea?

2. After buying this mobo, i realized, that my current AGP will no longer have a slot. So i need to buy a PCIe card, and i would like to stay under $100 max. I dont game at all, but i do like to watch movies on my computer as i have a 27" monitor. Suggestions for a suitable GPU would be appreciated. I am currently running a very old PCI card just to get by until i get a new one (would this have anything to do with my sound lagging?)

Thanks!

System info: 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo, 4GB DDR2, win 7 64x

Here is what I would do. First try the onboard sound. With head phones or whatever if you cant plug in your speakers. If that works reinstall the audio/firewire stuff. If that doesn't work, reformat again, installing your audio drivers first.

There are tons of good graphics cards in your price range. It has been a couple years since I have been involved with this type of hardware but I think ATI was a front runner for movies. I have an nVidia 8800GT in my PC and it plays HD fine though. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814102874 this looks pretty good.

I suppose the video could be causing the audio to lag if the video is taking all the processor speed, I don't think that is the issue though, is the screen lagging as well?

If your video processor is onboard, it could be sharing the memory with the mobo. When you scroll, it could be causing the lag by having to process video data that would otherwise be processed by an outboard video card. This is where your lag happens.

Get a decent video card, and see if that doesn't solve your problem.

If it's gonna be awhile before you can get a video card, try updating the video card drivers with the most recent ones from the manufacturer. Microsoft has "compatibility mode" drivers that work, but usually don't perform as well as the manufacturers drivers.

and really that goes for chipset and audio drivers for the motherboard too... make sure those are up to date.

Good luck!
