Computer problems...again

Sign in to disble this ad
Well, it's more of an issue with flash player rather than my computer. You see, the newest version of flash player will only install if you have x amount of space in your C drive. Problem is, my hard drive is on I:, and I can't change it to C: because:

1. You cannot change the letter of your boot drive
2. C: is taken by a "removable disk" drive, which doesn't actually have anything in it, it just sits there:

So, a work around is to just insert a flash drive and change its letter to C, but of course C isn't in the list of letters to change it to because it is taken by the previously mentioned blank removable disk drive.

So my question is: How do I get rid of the blank pointless "Removable disk (C: )"?

Thanks...

How about the SUBST command?

How did the removable disk drives get installed?

Mine were related to a multi-card reader that I installed.
They disappeared after I unplugged the card reader and rebooted.

It may be the multi-card reader I'll try that now.

I can't edit the current C:, it's not on the list of drives or anything.

eek, you might be screwed. If you unplug your card reader (if that's what you have) then those removable drives will disappear, but I don't think your system drive letter (I:) will change. That is set up during the initial Windows OS install and it's pretty much impossible to change after the OS install is completed. A lot of important system files and registry keys now point to your I: drive, and although there are a couple ways to force it to be C: it will not take effect to all the necessary files/keys. The only fix I've been able to find is to reformat and reinstall Windows. And if you do this, unplug any other hard drives/removable drives except for the CD/DVD drive you're installing from and the hard drive your OS is being installed on. This way you can be assured that it will be set as the C: drive.

An easier alternative is finding a way to install flash player that will allow you change it's default install location. This may not be possible, but it's worth looking into.

But..even if you get it to work by some way, I would expect see similar problems with other programs. Some are just coded to install their contents into C:, that is why I did a reformat when this problem had happened to me. I figured it would save me a lot of headaches down the road.

Shhhhhhhhhhiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii iiiiiiiiiiiiii---

Sooooooooooooooooooooooooo.......

I unplugged my card reader.

WHen the comp starts up the very first window shows it checking all devices attacked to the mother board.

The extra drives all disappeared.....

However.........................................

Now when it gets to the windows xp screen (the blue one where you log in), it shows the screen and the logo butttttttt...no login prompt so...I can't get into the PC.

Plug the reader back in and...still no dice.

It starts up normally...but...it gets to that screen and...

I am fearing the worst.

My main concern is...why in the heck would unplugging a card reader of all things bugger it up?

If it is as buggered as I think it may be and I have to reformat it from a disk then hey! I can upgrade to 64 bit.

Oh geez...

It's so hard to be optimistic right now.
