It looks like everything in my gateway 2000 is hooked up properly. When i turn it on, the monitor wont work but it sounds like its turning on. Could my graphic's card be shot? If I have to replace it, what should I replace it with? What else should I upgrade on this ancient machine?

A little more info? I'm using this just to record with audacity and a USB mic. Maybe to surf the web also. I am not using this as a gaming computer, although i guess with the right amount of stuff it'd beat my AMD Athlon X@ 64 processor.

In this order

check the cable and monitor first- since you have a laptop, you should be able to plug the monitor up to the laptop's VGA port to make they are working.

If the monitor and or cable work, then forget fixing the 2000. More than likely, it has an on board vid port, and you will have to get an AGP or PCI vid card, then reconfig the computer to use the new vid card, so you might as well get another PC, then pull the drive from the 2000 and make it a slave drive for audio recording, after moving your data from it to the new computer.

typically (not always)..
If you got the p.o.s.t. beep, the box is fine.

If you plug a monitor in and the is no signal present, the screen will display "no signal present" or some such drivel.

If you get a beep, the monitor seems to power but displays nothing...new monitor time.

if its onboard video...and that took a crap, youre going to have a heck of a time getting a new pci video card to read. DOes it even have an AGPx1 slot? There were different versions of agp slots and if its really old..you might seriously think about ditching the old machine. the Athlon 64 will kill it.

Check post beeps like the other cats said. Other issues, ram or cpu is dead..sometimes you get a post beep or two, sometimes nada.

Can the case be re-used? Most likely, HOWEVER..get a new power supply. that thing is prolly a 300watt at best and in now way has the new and extra connectors for AM3 or i7 or whatever you get.

Since its a non-serious pc, you dont need to spend a lot of money. Wich is a good thing. Dont go to Microcenter feeling you need a 1.5TB drive, a quad core and 16 GB's DDR3....for surfing????? Halo maybe.. Kontakt..you betcha..but surfing?? Nah.

Thanks man. I understood about 90% of it at first but now after googling some unsure terms I get it. Looks like my winter hobby will consist of repainting my bass and making a new computer. Thanks guys.

If it's not returning a power on self test (post) code, it's not completing the test which means...the mother board, CPU or the power supply is toast.

It's pretty tough to stop a post. It's a pretty low level function.
