Its terrible, and it wont let me download real virus protection programs or even go to sites that have info on it, it just redirects me to something else.
So I cant find out how to get rid of it..

I think the one you want will be something like "Safe Mode with Networking". I'm assuming you have XP, but I imagine the process is the same for Vista.

All you need is here: http://www.pchell.com/support/smitfraud.shtml

thanks for the help! |

An HTML page that pretends to be you "My Computer" and is doing a scan?
And afterwards a popup that is masked as your systems window?
Not sure if yours is the same thing I discovered on my dads computer... but here is what I did:
Disengage your internet connection first.
Open your webbrowser, go to options (or internet option or whatever it's called on your browser) and erase all internet history, temp files, cookies and startpage.
Then open your configuration screen, and open Software (a list of all installed programs on your computer).
Find out what doesn't belong there, the virus may have installed a masked anti-virus program.
Delete it if you found such a fraud program.
If it's the same kind of virus as I got rid of my dads computer this will work.
Although I'm not an expert and I can't figure out how it got on my dads computer.
(All I know my dad is clumsy and he may have clicked stuff that are obvious sour links.) |

You can download it for free. Let it scan and do it's thing.

Also to fix your dad's damaged registry you also better download/install "CCleaner" . . That ulility will locate all those lousy registry keys.. Then CCleaner will ask you if you want to delete them.. It will work out. |
