I was watching TV last night and saw a commercial/trailer for a remake of Conan: The Barbarian, to be released in August. My jaw hit the floor. I had not heard they were remaking this movie. I know threads have been devoted to "not another remake", or "Hollywood is out of ideas", etc, etc, etc. However, this was the first time I really felt "cheap" when thinking about the entertainment out there these days.
I was a kid when the original Conan was released. I remember watching it, and thinking how awesome it was (it isn't...age has shown me that). But why remake a (cult-ish) classic? This movie is going to flop. They have some no-name dude "starring", and probably paid him with Saltines and Gatorade. Whatever...just venting at the fleecing of my childhood...

Now I know that it's just a cool, kick-arse movie, that didn't need any sort of reboot / remake.

Don't forget, Conan was as series of books before it was a movie. Arnold doesn't have a monopoly on the character.
Seccondly, as to the bolded part, AFAIK, the part is being taken by Jason Momoa from Stargate: Atlantis, not an unknown to any sci-fi geek worth his weight in tribbles.

Since you also seem to dismiss Jason Momoa pretty quickly, it might be worth mentioning that Stallone just picked him up to be in one of his movies, so he is definitely moving up from his sci-fi origins. |

Conan: The Barbarian (orig.) > Conan: The Destroyer > Conan: The Barbarian (remake)
Also, the first Conan has one of the best sound tracks of any movie ever.

The original Conan movies are not high art. You'll get over it. |

For all I know, they should have just went ahead and produce the full version of Conan the Librarian instead ...

You'll get over it. | It's not a matter of artistic value, it's a matter of playing a character convincingly,Momoa is a no go when it comes to conan,he comes off as overzealous, practically emo, that's not conan at all.
