I was talking with my wife this evening and somehow we started talking about the economy and the future.
She said she thinks I should start selling off my basses while people still have money to buy them.
I don't want to sell my basses I have 4, soon to be 5, and they're all pretty cheap (sub $200) except two (around $400-$500) - I'm not the best player in the world but my gear is my hobby and the only material things that I own really besides my clothes and notebook.
Do you guys think she's right?

Keep your basses. No sense in worrying baout the future... tomorrow never comes.

The economy will recover, infact it is already starting to. People will always have money, and bassists will always be buying basses. If you do get stuck with them, hit me up and we'll work something out
My opinion; you could be in a car accident tomorrow, or next week. Play your basses and enjoy them while you are still around to do so. I'd rather have the things I want while I am still here to enjoy them, rather than a bunch of money in the bank. When you have a family and things to plan and care for, I would expect its a little different, but the principal is still the same.

My concern for the future isn't so much to do with the economy though...

I think your wife has been watching the news too much. Buy a box set of the first seasons of "Saturday Night Live" and make her watch them. |

Thats just the last day of their calander, which happened to be round, like a clock. Cycles man, everything goes in cycles. Where one ends, the next one begins! Quote: |

Are you sure she isn't just jealous of your hobby? Just asking; you should always pay attention to the gal. Show her you are thinking of the future by cutting back in other areas. I say never - never - give up something that makes you happy unless you take it too extremes and spend WAY too much money on it. If my wife and I lost our jobs, even if I sold everything in the house furniture and all, it would only buy a handful of months before the house was taken and the lights turned out. Basically, nothing lasts forever so enjoy now.

I don't know what you have for rent but here you'd only get enough for half a rent payment. It would go further with food, but in the grand scheme of things, you wouldn't be getting a life-changing amount of money for your basses. If money is so tight that you think you need to sell a few basses for the future, i'd work on budgeting your money better and/or finding a better job and make a savings with that route. That will help you out in the long run.
EDIT: Gab posted while i was typing this, but he said what i was getting to--is the 600 bucks you'd realistically make on selling 3-4 of your basses now buy you that much time if the economy tanks? It does sound like your girlfriend is actually saying "why are you buying another bass when the economy isn't so good and I don't think we have the income to carry us through comfortable" but that's just a guess. I know my gf would say exactly that, along with a few expletives
in my opinion, if money is tight, pick your best bass, sell the rest and focus on being really good at that...looking at your sig, you've got decent gear, so i'd focus on becoming a great bass player and then get some gigs, and then you've got some music money, as well as a secondary income if you lose your job
