Considering relocation to Alaska

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi all,

I've always wanted to live in Alaska and have been considering relocating there. I was wondering if any natives or people who have located there could give me some advice or tips?

Watch Survivor Man. Learn what to wear and how much you can sweat. Don't go near large mammals with their kids. And of course:

Watch out where the huskies go, and don't you eat that yellow snow.

I had a feeling this thread was going to be trouble. I almost didn't post it, but on the off chance I might get some real advice I thought I might as well

My post wasn't a quasi-political riff and was 3/4 serious.... no make that 100% serious.

And see what the rules are for getting that annual oil royalty check. A yearly GAS enabler.

You have to live there for a year before you can apply for that royalty check.

Its rural and poor mostly. The weather is harsh (duh?). About half a dozen or so residents lose their lives just walking away from their car off the road each year. Its that wild and wooly. Populated with practical people though, Sarah excepted.

If you're thinking of stalking Sarah … don't!!!

Don't call a snowmobile a snowmobile. It's a snow machine.

Don't brag that you have front-row seats to the Iditerod. (Everyone knows you can't possibly get front row unless you're really well connected.)

Forget about finding much social life in some areas, such as the Aleutian Islands.

Anchorage is named for Capt. Cook having dropped anchor there. Juneau the name of the capital? Yes it is.

Good luck if you move there! Make it an adventure, and know that a lot of people would love to do the same but never actually follow through.

Thanks, that's one of the reasons I really want to go through with it. I want to make it an adventure. Sounds like it's pretty wild and wooly but I love that kind of stuff.

Yeah, I imagine things like milk, eggs, beef and anything that has to be trucked way up there will cost more. What about the seafood? Cheaper? Better?

I love Alaska but it takes a certain type. People who love the outdoors tend to really like Alaska, those who prefer city life, not so much. I've been here off and on all my life and love it here ( duh). I feel it's really relaxed and quite liberal. Fairbanks ( where I am ) can range from redneck to kind of yuppie depending where you are. Anchorage tends to stay warmer during the winter and has much of the convenience of a big city. Along with that comes the people though which I don't care for. I like being able to drive for 20-30 minutes and being able to get away from everything. It's awesome here. Things are a bit more expensive but wages are also higher on average. Plus........ we get free money every year. Plus this year we got an additional $1200 for fuel costs. That's $3200 for free.

If you're gonna move, I'll hold your basses until you get settled.

I saw a TV reportage saying a lot of areas there suffer from a terribly bad balance between men and women, so if you're single but don't intend to stay that way, don't move there.
