Design for Korean towers evokes exploding WTC on 9/11;*Architects MVRDV apologize, say it wasn
I came across this topic in another forum, and I wanted to know opinions of my fellow TBers. Me personally, I can't understand how the architects couldn't see the resemblance to the WTC during the design process, and I do feel it's inappropriate. Discuss.

I think the joining part looks kinda cool. Would be a good office for a computer games company.

I do think it looks a little too much like the WTC on 9/11 but maybe that's partially because I read the OP before seeing the pic - I don't know. I think it also looks like Jenga on steroids. |

Whether they did it as a statement of some sort or did it for publicity, I don't buy for a minute that they didn't notice the resemblance.
I can't honestly say it offends me, but I know it will offend plenty of other people and I think it's wildly inappropriate. Having said that, they're free to put up whatever building they want, and I'm free to decide that all parties responsible are a bunch of jerks that probably hate America.

Publicity stunt, anybody? The towers falling is symbolic of Americas fall (to Koreans at least) and this is intended to offend Americans and raise anti-American morale, as Koreans believe that they're gearing up to become a world superpower by force. Want to get back at them? Ignore them, they hate that. Anybody with a laptop and cad can draw that, it's another thing to actually build it. It is inflammatory and intended as such. D--k move, but if we ignore it it'll go away. It's the international equivalent of playground taunting- the less mature one makes fun of the big boys cause they won't let him play.

The WTC represents (in the minds of the korean leaders) the fall of America. They want to piss us off. Want to get back at them? Ignore them, they hate that. 1) MVRDV isn't Korean.
2) It's a design concept. |

North or South?
North Korea is generally the troublesome one.
As far as I'm aware, this was to be built in Seoul, which is in the South.

Funny enough, if you added the 'bridge' to the top floor they'd just look like trees, but in that middle position... Yeah, I'm not feeling it.

Saying "Koreans" with all that vitriol shows a stunning amount of ignorance. |

Still, it could just be something as innocent as a recycled design, perhaps a design that was rejected for the new WTC, but the people financing this project liked it enough to incorporate it into their own development. Or it could be meant as some kind of statement, but not sure exactly what that is. |

| | Registered User | | | | | It's an ugly building. What does it mean? It means the people that designed it have different taste than mine, obviously. I get the concept of the towers rising above the clouds, but I don't really care for the look. Beyond that I give no other meaning to it. Ultimately they are the ones that would have to look at it day in and day out.
The new World Trade Center is going to be 1776 feet tall. Do you think that pisses the Brits off?
Just curious.
Sometimes a building is just a building. |

Doesn't get to me personally, but I am sure it would rub a buttload of people the wrong way. It looks..I mean it really looks an awful lot like the WTC imploding

| | | | I think it's a very interesting design. Does it resemble the twin towers? I think it does. Was it a deliberate attempt to piss off America? I honestly don't know...and I honestly don't really care. Perhaps I'd feel differently if I lost a loved one on 9/11.
...and +1 on making a disctinction between North and South Korea.

As does your "Tea Party" political movement.
