AVI is a bunch of different formats in one wrapper (much as Quicktime MOV is). Some/quite a lot of AVI's play in quicktime (especially if you install the divx codec's and/o r a few other versions).
It's not free, but the easiest way to do this to get Quicktime PRO (about $30 from Apple - no installs, just a license key). It enables a whole bunch of handy functions in Quicktime Player, so you can edit and save stuff out.
iMovie will convert some formats, but not others - it's a bit strange as Apple added support for a few formats to iMovie, but restriected the same functionality in QT unless you get pro.
