I'm going to be in the Anchorage/Homer/Valdez/Denali region (which is bigger than some countries....Alaska is a very big place)
Any suggestions of things to do and "must see"? |

Also, Valdez has a wonderful boat tour of the Prince William Sound. You'll get to see glaciers, whales, sea lions etc. but you might want to call ahead and make reservations now. We went on the Stan Stephens tour out of Valdez. We spend 10 days up in Alaska last summer. It's wonderful!

I just watched the vampires in Alaska movie, "30 days of night"....but in reality summer in Alaska is warm (and days are very long).
Interesting food? bars? places to flee charging bears?

We took the rail out of Anchorage and spent two days seeing Denali. Great scenery and animals. You can get one of the expensive charter services there to show you all the scenes and sights, or simply ride the park's free shuttle busses, which shows you about as much.
After our return we took the scenic highway from Anchorage to Seward. It is a beautiful drive. We spent about 3 days there. Seward has several quaint mom and pop shops, and some good places to eat as well. You can charter boats to show you whales, seals, and glaciers. Do take the free sea sickness pills if they offer them to you. Seriously.
A warning about Alaska. A brown bear CAN be just about anywhere at any time, even on the outskirts of Anchorage. They are not known to have a good demeaner. They can outrun a horse for a short distance. Never take chances with them. Puchasing a large canister of pepper spray to repel them is a good idea. Moose can be very dangerous as well, and if you rile them up they will stomp you into a greasy spot. On the plus side: no poisonous snakes in AK. Mousquitoes are really bad in some areas in the summer, and July and August can be quite hot. If you do not sleep well with alot of light around, get some of those things to cover your eyes with during sleeping hours.
Enjoy your trip. Plenty of great secenery for free. |
