Cracking the Code: The Adsense Algorithm Behind Banner Ads

Sign in to disble this ad
Let me begin by saying this is not a discussion about the content of the banners on TB. It's about the logic behind what makes a certain banner pop up.

First, there are at least two types of banners. Those that are paid directly to the owner. These are controlled completely by the admins based on prices, rates, impressions, etc. The second are syndicated banners from a service such as Google. A snippet of code is placed on a website that links to a service that spits out banner ads. Advertisers pay the syndicator, and then they pay the web site owner based on things such as click-through, impressions, etc.

Google uses something called Adsense which reads a number of different factors to spit out a "relevant" ad based on the content of the page. But based on what we've seen here, it seems to take a liberal stand on some keywords, while ignoring others. Some have mentioned cookies, but based on some of the cookies that are probably on some member's computer's, we'd porbably have much more objectionable banners showing up.

There is probably some filtering out of certain content by the admin, otherwise we'd be flooded with racier ads. But most filtering isn't perfect so something is coming through. Another reason why I'm curious to what the logic is.

So what do you think?

Mods, if you feel this is inappropriate, please delete it even though I feel this might help with administering the site as well as providing some insight to how banner ads work.

Me too, "banner ads" and "Verizon network" service. But, I had to allow scripts to see ANY of them.

I doubt that there is any filtering by the mods, as (I believe) google has standards on what they advertise. This would explain why there isn't any racier ads. From what I get from JT sticky is that the admins are trying to figure out a way to filter the ads, thus why they want the URLs of the questionable ads that are popping up.

My two cents, based on pure speculation.

Haha, now there's an ad for creating ads. How ironic.

So,....if I were to use a word such as "boobies", do you think we would get ads from the audubon society?

I tried that in another thread, and that got us no-where.

Well, I take that back. I did see an ad for transvestite supplies, so I might have been able to buy a boob there.

Based on the last two posts, only stuff related to cracking the code and banner ads come up. Makes me wonder if Google is only reading the first so-many lines of this page, and ignoring the rest?

I see. Perhaps it has something to do with amount of the same word being used. The more dominate word or words pertaining to one product or group will get the ads.

Lets take the that particular bird. The boobie. Sometime referred to a boob, or a group of boobies. Would that a flock of boobies? I really don't know. Anyway. If it's boobie, boob, or boobs my point is it is the amount of time the word boobie boob boobs appears. But I digress and do not want to lower myself to use that tactic.

That's what I though too, but then I noticed that my hair was falling out, and I was having more trouble getting chicks to date me. I'm married, so I shouldn't be dating at all, and my wife says that my hair loss isn't really a problem for her. Problem is, she's dating someone herself, and he still has all his hair. I've thought about trying Rogaine or something, but I'm afraid it might have some side effects. I know a friend who used it and next thing you know, genital herpes. He now takes valtrex every day, but he has a full head of hair.

What gives?
