Craigslist deal going sour. may need your help...

So i found a Mesa Boogie Single Rec on the Cincinnati Craigslist 2 weeks ago. I'll take it. I sent him the money on 1-15-10. I asked he ship it when he saw it in his paypal, and he explained that he needed the money i paid to ship it. 725 dollars by the way. Anyways, whatever, i understand some people dont have 40 dollars to throw into shipping. I'll wait. Monday was MLK day, Tuesday the money was in his bank account as he stated. Tuesday he sends me an email saying he will ship it tomorrow, Wednesday. Wednesday came around and i didnt get a single email or anything. Thursday he emails me and tells me that he went to guitar center Wednesday and they didnt have a box, so he will send it today, as in Thursday. Ok...I just gave this guy 725 dollars, you think he could spring for a 5 dollar box at the ups store, or find one elsewhere. I asked he send Fedex because they deliver on Saturday and I had plans to buy a speaker cabinet this weekend, and wanted to take the head with me. He was ruining my plans. No problem he says, Fedex is right by my work so ill just drop it off on my way. So he was supposed to drop it off Thursday afternoon. I asked reasonably for a tracking number when he got it. Well, here it is Friday, at 3:13. I haven't received an email since 1:30 Thursday. I called his cell, no answer. If I do not get a hold of him by the end of today, I will be releasing his band name to you guys in hopes that somebody knows somebody who may know this metal band he is in located out of Cincinnati.

Did you get this guys personal info... like home address and phone number before making this deal?
That is a lot of money to lose, I would contact Paypal to see what your options are before this goes on too long.

well, ill give it another day or so. Don't want to panic for no reason. I do have a phone number and a name. No address. I have his bands name. His bands myspace. I'm sure i could get an address. Very odd last name.

Could just be that he's a bit of a flake. I know that's unheard of for musicians.

What worries me is that he wanted his Paypal account to clear before he sent you a tracking number. It's probably easier for Paypal to get the money back for you if it's still in his account, so he made sure there was none.

I don't want to upset you, but I would panic. He might have picked a random band's Myspace. Maybe not even in that band. I would tell him to give you a tracking number by the end of the day or you're filing a Paypal claim. Don't waste time!!

Anyway, never do Craigslist shipping deals. Ebay is okay because of the feedback. You have a good idea of who your dealing with. Craigslist is about as anonymous as it gets.

I am not sure if you can file a paypal claim if the item wasn't purchased through eBay...I could be wrong though. I have accepted PayPal off of CL before for deals...

I agree, CL is for local deals...mostly. I had a guy contact me from PA and I'm in VA. He was adamant about buying something I was selling. He shot me the money to my PayPal acct. and I promptly shipped it out the next business day. But I'm a honest guy! However, I will never buy anything from CL long distance! Only from Talkbass or an online retailer. I do hope you get your amp!

honestly, i googled his name and found a ton of information for him. so unless he has different profiles in like 10 sites all with the pictures of the same fat acne ridden long red haired loser, then i dont think i will have a problem knowing and finding him. lets see.

I have and will ship basses to fellow TBers in Canada and the States. I have and will ship effects pedals to fellow TBers pretty much worldwide.

Kijiji and CL are strictly face to face for me. Cash exchanged and product exchanged.

I trust the TB community. Might be a tad naive but so far it has worked for me. I have had too many scams thrown my way off Kijiji to ever ship an item or send money through one of those ads.

I would call him and explain that you are freaking out thinking that you have been ripped off. You can check the phone # against the name at www.whitepages.com - by doing a reverse phone # search. Good luck, I hope you get what you paid for....

edit: re-read original post- probably won't work for a cell phone.....

Update. I called him three times. He finally picked up. Said he was at work and only picked up this time because he is on his lunch break. Anyways, he said he shipped it yesterday and the tracking # is in his car. He will email me the number around 10:00 tonight hopefully. If not, I will be making a road trip and hanging his head on my basement wall.

Now fedex is totally owning me, haha. He shipped thursday morning. it was quoted as today, saturday, and now it says tuesday. i called and they said they put it on the wrong truck, lol. I've called to complain. Lets hope they get this straight.
