take them apart, tape the reel to your car, drive away and marvel at the pretty black streamers.

or

you can hide your w33d in it. (SNL)

The ones I wanted to keep I bought on DVD. Other stuff I had a friend dump them to DVD for me. The rest I just chucked in the trash. There might be some charities that would take them, but when I checked around here, there weren't. DVD players are ridiculously cheap now.

I'll take any VHS movies you might want to get rid of. You can keep the home video stuff. I still have 2 functioning VCRs, and a good amount of VHS. My gf's movie collection is primarily VHS and I just fixed her broken VCR with my magic touch.

Pick up a Pinnacle Dazzle (Ebay) with both their Studio and Direct to DVD software, and a VHS deck with an S-video out (pawn shop/Ebay).

Use the Dazzle to transfer the video directly to your computer's DVD drive/burner. Using the S-video output, the result will be about the same res as the native VHS format. At this point, you have a DVD that's viewable on a TV.

Use Handbrake, then Any Video Converter, to capture the DVD and reduce it to a size that will play on your iPod or Blackberry. On a screen that size, the grainy res of the DVD becomes very sharp and visually pleasing.

BT-DT. Most of my old VHS library is converted to DVD and I can move it to a mobile device for viewing.

Then you can donate the tapes to a charitable organization or recycle them.

What a thing to be an enthusiast of. I wracked my brain, and the only reason I could think that a person would want a VHS tape over a DVD of the same film is either

A) The film hasn't been released yet on DVD
B) the VHS tape is cheap or free (or they already own it)
C) They flee from the light.

So did I miss one, Matticus?

No, I think you got 'em all. B is the biggest reason. I'd also rather won a DVD copy over a VHS copy. Though there are still alot of movies out there that I love and have yet to own. I'll gladly take anyone's unwanted VHS off their hands. A lot of these movies can be had for $1 or less.

And also, light bothers me.
