Creating a new holiday tradition

When I was a kid I couldn't wait to open my gifts on Christmas and enjoy the Turkey and everthing else my mom cooked. As I got older I couldn't wait to see the looks on the faces of my wife and my son when they opened their gifts. I really looked forward to getting together with the extended family and having fun.
Now, the gifts don't mean that much to us, in fact my wife and I don't buy each other gifts at Christmas. Since my in-laws died the family is a lot more fragmented and not into getting together as much. We still do it but it's not the same.
I have been thinking and talking to my wife about setting up some new sort of tradition to celebrate and look forward to each year. Sometimes we volunteer at local homeless kitchens and/or recovery houses. I really enjoy it but I'm not sure that is what it is.
So, is there something special you do? Any ideas?

I always get together with my family. I'm the youngest of six and with all the nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews and husbands and wives and.......

There are over 30 people involved when my immediate family gets together. I love them all, and we all get along like a family is supposed to.

My nephews are still young so I enjoy watching them open gifts. When they're older I'll probably just sit at home and get drunk by myself.

A Stark Trek marathon, Indian or Chinese take away, and a good case of beer. A MAJOR METAL holiday indeed.

Until last year, my brother and his family always came home to visit for Christmas but since my father passed away last year and my sister-in-law's parents both passed away this year, they will not be coming here this year. Instead, my mother is going to visit them in Virginia Beach. For Christmas Eve, I plan on attending the contemporary service at my church and then spend the evening with my adult daughter. On Christmas Day, I will most likely be alone. My grown son lives in Alabama and none of my family will be around. I might go to Virginia Beach after Christmas to visit my brother and bring my mother home. So, Christmas will be quiet for me.

Christmas eve is spent with my mom's family - lots of food, games, laughs and presents (given and received).
Christmas day is spent with my dad and his immediate family, then my girlfriend's family - more food, games laughs and presents.

Some of my girlfriend's family is coming this Christmas eve too. I generally prefer the eve.

I GUESS its an in-depth discussion! Boy, I'd sure never ask my Mom to admit anything like that.
