Cruise Ship Band Fakery

Sign in to disble this ad
Just spent a week on a cruise ship. In the biggest lounge there was a band consisting of guitar, bass, keys, drums, and 3 horns. I heard them several times during the cruise and they sounded fine. It was "real" music. On the last night of the trip went attended a show and it seemed most of the music was recorded. Instead of 3 horns, you heard a very large horn section , lots of percussion , and tons of backing vocals. You could see the musicians going through the motions but the sound was too slick and processed (especially compared to previous performances.) I know that I was the only one in the room that gave a crap about that, but it bugs me!!

My wife was in a T40 pop trio (gtr/drm/key&gtr) using an Apple and Ensoniq to fill out a lot of vocal backups, and string and horn parts.
Would have bugged me too except they are all awesome singer/players.

They did it to save money.

Used to sit in on nights my band wasn't playing.
Playing to a click is fun with a good drummer. Or put the candy on 'hold' and have a "real" band!
Some of those 80s/90s dance hits had smokin' bass parts!
