In your early 30's, you are just far enough removed from your youthful mistakes to know where you screwed up and how to avoid those scenarios in the future, but just a bit too old for anyone younger than you in those same scenarios to even want to listen to you save them from themselves.
It can be maddening at times, I tell you. You guys ever realize that reading a lot of the threads posted here is like watching someone hit themselves with a hammer? Sometimes the thread is "what hammer should I hit myself in the face with?". I'm not sure what can be done. I'm guessing I'll take up residence in the "I told you this would happen" wing of life's institution and grab a window seat and a beer.

Mike | As well you should. Realistically, you've just gotta accept that younger people naturally do not listen to older people and you just have to let the stupidity play its course. Besides, what's a better teacher, someone telling you not to do something, or doing something and finding out WHY you shouldn't do it?
Anyway, I've still got 13 more years to figure out WHY I shouldn't do things and I'm thoroughly looking forward to them

Sometimes the best lessons learned are the mistakes one makes. Who am I to stop higher education. |

I'm sure I didn't like being told what to do when I was younger, but it seems like young folks today are more resistant to helpful advice and more interested in finding out for themselves. As such, I find myself sitting in the window seat right behind you.

At best it works on a reverse psychology level. At worst it just speeds up the learning process and hopefully gets them to stop asking me before they do idiotic things.
Date your best friends girlfriend right after they break up?
Great idea!
Skateboard off the roof of your house?
I say find something higher.
And so on. |

Mike | haha. Just remember how you learned the right way when you were younger. An older voice doesn't always help. Sometimes it takes failing to become conscious of your own stupidity! |

To paraphrase the old saying, "you can tell them, but you can't tell them much." However, most of us do listen to reason fairly often...or at least, often enough to stay alive.
But - that's life. People keep getting smarter as they go about how to cope with life, and most of them live long enough to put their accumulated wisdom to work.
