Cyclone Yasi.

I posted a thread not long about about flooding happening in southern QLD. Now there is a category 5 cyclone hitting me tonight. Last I heard it was 700kms wide and a 100km eye.
Tonights going to get rough.

Yikes,...a quick look at a map shows Cairns right on the coast. Head for the hills man.

I'm about 20kms south and a little inland from Cairns. But I think the entire bottom floor of work will go underwater, and there are many very expensive digital pianos etc there.

If it's below sea level and close enough to the coast it will definitely flood. Storm surge is the great killer with these storms.

I think I'm safe from storm surge up to about 10m or so.

As a vet of the worst Atlantic Hurricane season on record, I'll offer up one piece of advice:
stay busy afterwards. If not, you'll just go mental...

Good luck, my grandparents were just evacuated this morning. 320km/h winds or so last report.
