Years ago we used to "rescue" turtles, mostly box turtles. What happens is that people buy them at pet shops for their kids etc (though not in NJ) or pick them up off the side of the road and keep them as pets (note - if you see a turtle on the side of the road, PLEASE just carry it to the other side if you can do so safely and let it live).
They then invariably end up diseased or half dead because contrary to popular belief, they are actually hard to care for properly then folks end up wanting to get rid of them. Yet, because they are potentially diseased you CANNOT release them back into the wild as they're likely to then go and spread that disease to others and possibly decimate the local populations. It's happened time and again.
We have an outdoor turtle pen and allow them to hibernate through the winter, which is the healthy, and natural way to keep them.
Anyway...I just poked outside to check and see if our turtles have come out of hibernation yet since it's such a warm day.. and I found my son's prize box turtle dead. He's not going to take it well since he's had this turtle since he was 2 (he's 16 now..) He was expecting to have this turtle until he was an old man. (Box turtles can live longer than humans if they're properly cared for.)
dammit I hate this, what a bummer.

The sad part about this was that my son's really attached to this turtle and was even talking about taking him with him when he goes away to college in a few years... blah.
Maki - weekend at bernie's?? lol! OK, I got a laugh outta that one, I wont lie!

That said... when life gives you lemons
Too soon? Yeah...I guess you're right.

but..yeah, too soon. "Too soon" jokes usually miss their mark with me, then again admittedly I get too emotional with some stuff

-Mike | I was, trust me. But having had turtles as pets all my life, I also realize that some people eat them and see them as being on par with chickens, or fish or something of the sort. It's reality..
Personally, I could not eat something with a distinct personality and who may be over 100 years old but to each their own I guess. This particular one used to sleep on my son's lap while my son was petting him and would even eat from his hands, no joke. He was very very tame so the thought of eating him is kinda repulsive TBH. Life's too short to stay pissed though.
