Question Dating your second cousin?

Sign in to disble this ad
I know someone who's started to date their second cousin. What do you think of that? I'm not sure what I think of it.

Opinions, please.

On one hand i think its a bit dodgy, on the other hand you cant control love and its not like they are brothers and sisters or first cousins!

Im pretty sure kids between second cousins have high odds of being normal!

Remember that until not long ago it was usual for big families and Monarchy to marry their own cousins (sometimes first) and most of them ended up fine!

If they dont see a problem, more power to them!

In places where cousin marriage is common, the marriages are usually arranged. Dating a cousin is weird because if things go bad she is still in your family, and may still have to deal with her.

Blood relation of any kind = not good.

It doesn't make sense saying this, since we're all blood related.
Even a 1st cousin isn't much of an issue genetically speaking and it's allow in most places.

Legal, but I'm with everyone else, dodgy.

Dare say, it could be worse:

(I feel sorry for the couple, they didn't have a clue )

Genetically speaking, you are drastically increasing your chances of hereditary conditions with first cousins.

It is an absolutely neglictable risk unless there is a known recessive genetic issue running rampant in the family. In this case the issue becomes prevalent.

Im of the problem it really isn't an issue unless you grew up with the relative. If you never have seen the person they're essentially a stranger.

I'm willing to bet that most family trees have several recessive genetic issues running through them. Being recessive, they'll likely remain unknown unless it pops up by unfortunate chance, by breeding with a close relative or by getting your DNA sequenced, and even though that is becoming fast and affordable, and we have the majority of conditions databased, I certainly don't know anyone who has done it

I'm betting those guys wish it was that simple! (granted, significantly higher risk in that case!)

How many people need to know their little secret? It's likely such a thing is more common than most people would suspect.

I think it's gross. Way too many people out there to be dipping in the gene pool in your back yard.

A big no to that from me. To me they are apart of my family, not merely blood-kin. It'd be a bit too much like dating a first cousin. So I guess in a world where I did not regard second cousins as a part of my family, I'd might have a different opinion.

But seriously, here's something I thought of 20 years ago:
Think of all the people you've been intimate with - approx 20?
Think of all the people you've dated - maybe 100?
Think of the members of the opposite sex you've ever met - maybe 500?
Think of the members of the opposite sex you've ever seen - maybe 2,000?
...
Think of all the members of the opposite sex there ARE - 3,420,253,500!

Maybe time for them to date someone they don't know to be a blood relative!

YMMV
IMHO
