It's 8:28 AM and I am wide awake. Normally I would be snoozing, but I'm not, because my body thinks it's an hour later then it actually is.
Thank you, George Vernon Hudson. If I ever invent a time machine I am going to program a robot to go back in time and shoot you in the face with a bazooka. and then destroy your DNA so you will never be able to exist again ever.
If you don't know, this jerk is the man responsible for daylight savings. He liked to collect insects, and decided that since he couldn't collect them after work, because it was too dark, he needed to create daylight savings so he could go collect his bugs after work so he'd have daylight. It was adopted by the British, and since England was the America of the era it eventually spread like a cancerous disease through the known world.
So who wants to help me design a time machine and build a robot to prevent Daylight savings from ever happening again?

actually, from what i understand, the rationale used most often was that it would help folks save electricity due to fewer awake "dark hours" where they needed to have their lights on. at the time the majority of energy usage by private individuals was electric lighting, so the thought that a substantial percentage of their energy bill could be saved was attractive to folks.
also, blame retail lobbiests for its continued persistence. every time it comes up to be renewed, retail lobbiests push hard for it (retail benefits from DST, whereas farmers don't).
so, here again, something we can blame on walmart.

| | | | It is time to retire this silly, and now useless feel good bit of government led nonsense. It may have made sense in times past, but in this 24 hour a day world with most of the developed world being blessed with electricity and electric light, it's a useless artifact in our nation. The trouble is that DST has wide political support across the aisle from both major parties, to where that they won't listen to the recent studies that indicate that it does not save energy, and in some cases might lead to more energy consumption than what it's supposed to save. It's time to junk it! |

i'd prefer it as well, or at least adopting one and staying on that year round

Even in the middle of summer here it gets dark at about 6:30, because we don't have daylight savings. That means by the time you get down the beach after work you have an hour. With daylight savings you would have two.
Where I used to live, with daylight savings time, it was nearly 10 before it got dark. Thats almost 5 hours of beach time before dark
Not only that, but the sun comes up later. Here, the sun comes up at about 4:30 am, and people are out jogging and mowing their lawn. When I wake up at 9:30 its ****ing midday just about.
I feel like getting up at 4am one morning, walking out there and yelling at people "WHAT ARE YOU DOING, YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO BE SLEEPING!"
