In the DC area, milk is now cheaper than diesel

Sign in to disble this ad
Citgo station off the B-W parkway, near my house.

A gallon of whole milk there is $4.09. Still no tax on food in MD, at least I don't think so.

Diesel fuel is $4.09. And nine-tenths. A gallon.

Not that you can run your car on it, but what else is sold by the gallon and is now cheaper than motor fuel?

Our economic system surrounding oil's use, procurement and production is all pretty crappy. But we need it to function in this world, so prices will rise until everyone just stops going places, then we'll really have to figure out something else to do.

Cry me a river, $9.76USD / Gallon at my local station. That's after road tax, insurance, etc.

Hey, that's the price you pay to be reassuringly elitist!

Motor oil is more expensive per gallon. Water is cheaper. There is no relevance to any of these comparisons.

Also, the truck that carries your milk to the store runs on diesel. So don't expect the milk to stay cheap as the diesel gets pricier.

There are plenty of alternatives, getting people to use/switch to them is the hard part.

Ah, but this is an election year. If there is no relevance, someone will spin one.

How many of you buy bottled water? What do you pay per ounce out of a vending machine? How 'bout that new Micki D's commercial for sweet tea; about 6 oz of tea with ice and a cup for $1.00. And they are proud of that price. What is it about gas and oil that makes us think its a right to buy it cheap. We compete for it on world market, transport it, refine it, distribute it, tax it and sell it for about $4.00/gal. Not bad when compared to sweet tea and bottled water that nobody says squat about. Outrageous profits? Sure, its called supply and demand. I remember buying Camel filterless premium cigarettes in the 60's for $0.19 a pack, gasoline for $0.27 a gal, 16 oz cola for $0.10 and a pack of peanuts for $0.05. You could get a brand new Volkswagon for under $2000.00. It's a different world folks; get used to it.

Ah, but realistically no one needs to buy bottled water, sweet tea, Camel filterless premium cigarettes, cola, or a pack of peanuts.

See the difference?
