I haven't been able to get through to change.org for ~ 9 hours.

Under Attack by Chinese Hackers, Change.org Asks Supporters of Ai Weiwei to Tweet Sec. Clinton for Help | the Change.org blog

If one clicks the link in my sig, one will find a link to:

AWS Service Health Dashboard - Apr 21, 2011

It seems that this sustained DDoS attack has taken out
a chunk of AWS' coverage for North Virginia.

DDoS is still the elephant in the room - But a different kind of beast | TechEye

Quote:
..."As time goes by they [DDoS] will become a key way for companies and rivals to cause major trouble for each other, and there's already many a hacker/company making money from this type of attack."

However, governments in the UK and the US are "not currently considering this type of attack in their security notes. It's too new, and the way they see it, it's not as important as, for example, a cyberbot from China.

"It's therefore not even worth talking about legislation, until they finally see what a threat this type of attack is."

And that could mean something catastrophic for national security, he says.

"Something really major needs to happen before they take this seriously.

"Drawing comparisons with the physical world, and, as sad as is it, we need a cyber DDoS 9/11 to occur. Only then will governments sit up and think about legislation."

I remember hearing about these months ago and saying "If someone doesn't get on policing for those, it could get ugly."

Nice to see no one paid attention.

I'm typically against vigilante-ism, and this is even worse for the business sector. I have a feeling that as soon as a major corporation gets attacked, the policing will begin.

Record more personal information, probably.

Most security issues are easily fixed by removing privacy...

Yes. IIRC DDoS is an acronym for Distributed Denial of Service.

Some background:
What is distributed denial-of-service attack (DDoS)? - Definition from Whatis.com

BTW. Change.org is still off-line.

Wait, did I read that right? Did someone seriously claim that we need a 9/11 style internet attack so that people start paying attention to this?

They may have used the 9/11 reference as a metaphor.

--------

Change.org is back up.

Although AWS Service Health Dashboard - Apr 22, 2011 is still indicating what appears to be the same degree of service disruption for North Virginia.
