Cells from dead cattle are being used to create clones in an effort to boost beef production in the US, BBC News reports.
Cows are cloned based on desired traits such as meat quality, longevity and productivity, but some farmers believe the best specimens can't be determined until deceased, when their meat is available to analyze.
When a specific cow determined to be an extraordinary example is cloned, the newly-created creature is then bred with naturally born cows in the hopes that their offspring will inherit some of the special characteristics of the original cow.
The US Food and Drug Administration determined meat and milk from cloned animals to be safe two years ago, though Whole Foods Market has banned the sale of such products. Its global vice-president, Margaret Wittenberg, told BBC News, "A lot of customers in the United States are oblivious of it," referring to products of cloned livestock in the US food chain.
