What's with the grunting every time you hit the ball. Is it really necessary? I'm sorry, but it's just really weird. Please stop.

For real though, sometimes when you just try to put everything you got into 1 hit it comes out as a sort of release I guess..
I grunt maybe once or twice a match (not at the Williams' volume) and only when I'm really giving the shot my all

But I'm not sure why tennis players make so much noise while they do it.

That's one analogy-maximum physical exertion.
The second analogy:
When you sing at the top of your range (assuming you do sing), do you open your mouth (at the back) a small or large amount? The larger the amount allows the soft pallate-a huge open space for the sound to reverberate in. This is learned in training, and promotes optimum control over sound. That's two-great control over your movements.
So, if a player is giving all of their mental focus or concentration, physically putting ALL the power possible behind a forehand, or backhand swing, and putting all their juices into controlling the direction of the ball, it is not performed quietly!
BTW, I was one of the tennis guys in HS.
