What's with the grunting every time you hit the ball. Is it really necessary? I'm sorry, but it's just really weird. Please stop.

you hit the ball better and with more energy if you exhale when you hit it. i had to do it in boxing also.

Because it makes me look hot and distracts my opponent

For real though, sometimes when you just try to put everything you got into 1 hit it comes out as a sort of release I guess..

I grunt maybe once or twice a match (not at the Williams' volume) and only when I'm really giving the shot my all

It's proper form to exhale while engaging in an instantaneous burst of strong physical activity (such as lifting a heavy weight, throwing a punch, doing a pull up, swinging a bat, etc..)

But I'm not sure why tennis players make so much noise while they do it.

When I am going to play golf (which might just as well be never), I am going to make an effort to grunt.

That only works if you have THE HAMMER.

I don't grunt when playing pocket tennis. Does that make you feel better?

Think of it this way, is there any effort that you make in-play during a sports where you focus ALL of your energy on running a short distance, or throwing a javelin, shot, or the like? That's one analogy-maximum physical exertion.

The second analogy:
When you sing at the top of your range (assuming you do sing), do you open your mouth (at the back) a small or large amount? The larger the amount allows the soft pallate-a huge open space for the sound to reverberate in. This is learned in training, and promotes optimum control over sound. That's two-great control over your movements.

So, if a player is giving all of their mental focus or concentration, physically putting ALL the power possible behind a forehand, or backhand swing, and putting all their juices into controlling the direction of the ball, it is not performed quietly!

BTW, I was one of the tennis guys in HS.

When I play tennis (yes, I was talking about tennis) I often jump like a fairy, arms and legs sprawled every which way, as I swing and hit balls slightly out of reach. Grunts abound, no doubt.
