According the Mayans and many other philosphers, we have 4 years and 9 days to live. Your thoughts?

I don't see how that would specifically indicate the "end times".
My calender only goes to the end of the year, that would indicate the world ending
next year no?

That is the date that the "Age of Aquarius" begins... the reason the Mayan calendar ends on that day is because its the day that the alignment of the constellations along the path of the sun ( The Ecliptic) completes a full shift of 1(making is a very convenient time to end a calendar based on stellar observations). This is all a result of the earths rotation. The Mayans as well as many other ancient civilizations (the Druids, The Egyptians, The Babylonians) where incredibly skilled astronomers, they based their calendars, and religious beliefs almost solely on the stars. Heck why do you think Christmas is the 25th of December (cause back then people still celebrated solaces) There is a whole field called astronomical anthropology dedicated to studying this stuff.
These are also the constellations that we use to mark our birth signs which means that although I'm a Pisces at the moment on 12/21/12 I will be an Aquarius. Tell that to a Vally girl and watch their world crumble.

"Why the hell do we have to make calendars for so far in advance"? So one day he got to that date on the calendar and said F it, ill make more of them if we get there. I think it could work. |

It's a bit premature 50 years ahead of the event...... |

| Yes, and if you want to be precise about it you probably already have...
I wish I could still find the chart with the dates on it...but this gives you an idea of how it works.

| No this is because the people who invented birth signs (astrologists) used the stars to assign the birth signs, over the past 700 or so years(I'm not much of one for remembering dates) those stars have moved (well rather we have moved in relation to those stars)...so the dates they set for the birth signs are no longer accurate.
The Mayans just also had an interest in the same constellations...because they realized their positions could be used to keep track of time over many, many years....The Mayan calendar (much like stonehenge) is a glorified astronomical chart that keeps track of things like Eclipses and Equinoxes and Solstices and the Ecliptic.

| | | | Man, remember how all or the armchair Nostradamuses were saying the world was going to end in the year 2000? I remember I was a senior in high school. I watched the ball drop on TV. Waited around a few minutes to see if a comet was going to hit, nuclear missiles were going to fire off randomly, or if a gentleman who died on a cross 2000 years ago was going to return. None of that happened, so I went to bed. I'm not looking forward to all of the nutjobs who are going to go crazy in 2012 again. For the record, I don't think that the Mayans ever claimed that the world was going to end in 2012. That's just when their calender ends. Some scholars believe that we're going to enter a new age of enligtenment then, so who knows?
It is scary times that we're living in, however.
