Decisions,decisions,decisions (College Related)

Sign in to disble this ad
Its my senior year in high school, and college application deadlines are coming up. I will be moving away for college. I've been born and raised here in the middle east. This is a pretty big fork in my road; it's probably one of the most important decisions in my life. It's a pretty drastic change, I've lived in Bahrain for all of my life. I really cant wait to move!

I'm kind of scared to be honest though lol, I mean who wouldn't? I'll be Leaving my family and country and I'll move to another continent with a totally different culture.

Now, I will be applying to three countries. The United Kingdom,Canada, and the United States. I have narrowed down my list of applicants in Canada and the UK. All thats left is my list of unis in the states. I have done some research on these universities and their locations. Thing is, you cannot get all the information you need from websites. Some time's its best to ask people who have actually been to these places.

I would greatly appreciate it if you'd give me a bit of insight on these universities and cities. You know, living conditions, music scene, and some information on the university itself if you know about it.

Here is the list:

Bowling Green State University - Ohio

University of Toledo - Ohio

Portland State University - Oregon

Colorado State University at Pueblo

University of Colorado at Colorado Springs

Louisiana State University at Baton Rouge

University of Arizona at Tucson

University of Texas at Arlington/San Antionio(can't decide)

State University of New York at Albany/Binghamton

University of North Carolina at Greensboro

University of Wisconson at La Crosse

So yeah, any comments about these universities/cities would be greatly appreciated. I need to narrow this list down to about 6-8. I'm trying to collect as much information as possible about city life, racism, people, prices, entertainment, etc.

Bass brethren, I seek your help . I joined this site when I was 12, TB has offered me loads of help over the years, so I know i can always count on you guys.

Thank you

Out of the two in Texas I would go for the one in San Antonio, Colorado Springs is pretty nice and probably my favorite out of the ones you listed.

Go to the one with the lowest admission standards. That's where all the hot women will be.

EDIT: I just saw - State University of New York at Albany/Binghamton

Your going to be 3 hours by car from NYC in Albany or Binghamton. I've never been to either of these places although I have been to another SUNY school (New Paltz) and it was a nice place (not much for dorms but the facilities where nice).

People up here are generally pretty chill, upstate NY is a very pretty place, mountains and forests and farms everywhere.

There are lots of schools that I would love to get into. Its not that I can't get into them because of my academic record. It's because I would be counted as an international student. I'd have to pay out of state tuition fees, which can sometimes be triple the amount of in state fees .

Cool

Meant to ask aswell, what is it you are wanting to study?

One thing I will say about UK universities at least, is they rip off people from outside the UK. The other guys in my course are paying ~ £12K for this year (granted its post grad). And the last uni I was at charged £10K per year for international students!

Random nugget of information, but my dad was scouted by San An., they wanted him to go over to be the physio for their sports teams (would have if there wasnt issues that tied him to the UK at time time).

I edited my post...I didn't see SUNY on your list, unfortunately I don't know all that much about that area.

10K pounds is actually considered pretty darn good if you're an international student >.<

What exactly are you planning to study?

Your UK list (as I'm based inthe UK so I'll comment on that), seems to be somewhat random. Not that they're bad places, but they're not big name places that someone would travel to unless they had a specific course in mind.

Overseas fees are more in the UK, but that's simply because the UK government isn't making the contribution it would. However overseas students ARE very much treated as a source of extra income, as they can be recruited as extra students on top of the government approved/funded quota.

I wouldn't have thought that overseas fees varies so much in the UK that they would make a major impact on your choice. Though all universities are supposed to be the same, there is a BIG difference, and the best places are worth the extra.

Yeah, what are you looking to study? That could have a huge influence.

I'm not familiar with any of those in particular, but I applied, and was accepted to another SUNY school, but turned them down in the end for something closer to home.

Do not attend any schools located in colorado springs or pueblo. If you attend in colorado springs, get ready for the onslaught of evangelical christians and airforce cadets who will probably rape you regardless of gender. Nikola Tesla once said: "There are only two types of people who flock to colorado springs: people with tuberculosis and people who want to get tuberculosis." Of course he said that about 100 years ago, but i still think that it applies.

Pueblo, well, blows, its in the middle of nowhere, theres a huge nuthouse with inmates constantly escaping.

If you are going to go to school in colorado, go to CU boulder or CSU Fort Collins. Lots and lots of breweries, lots of cool people, shite-loads of bike paths and neat-o restaurants. Stuff isn't too expensive and Jessica Beil is from there and Joe Walsh lived (or lives?) there.

I'm planning to major in Marketing. I'm still unsure about my minor however, but it's probably going to be something business related.

BassActionBtard, I would love to get into UCBoulder or CSU Fort Collins but their tuition fees are too expensive for me =[.

You'd be wise to stay out of Toronto. York is located in the middle of a desolate wasteland of an industrial area, and getting downtown, especially in the winter is a bit of a chore. Ryerson is smack dab, right downtown, so it's crowded. A lot of pretentious art and design students go there, too. You'll recognize them by their pea-coats and asymetrical haircuts. They also wear wool scarves in the summertime. The women here are, in many cases awful, unfriendly and uninteresting. The citizens are rude and unfriendly, there are mentally unstable, crack addicted homeless all over most of the affordable neighborhoods, the cost of living is through the roof, the public transportation system is a complete joke, winters are pretty awful...

Seriously... I've lived here all my life... I can't wait to get the **** out.
