There's a whole lot of conjecture going around as to why--most of it includes the midterm elections, and so I left it out, per TB rules.

Lifting the ban means nothing on it's own. You have to go through a whole new permitting process before you can drill, (unless you are from China, Cuba, Venezuela or Russia.

Very true. The MMS and other govt groups have not eve rolled out the changes yet.

I read an article a couple of days ago, can't remember where (for link), about China buying up some Texas oil fields. So don't be too surprised if that move wasn't a "you owe us trillions of dollars in debt we bought from you, we want to drill HERE".

The funniest part in all this, is that most Americans think that that all the oil that comes from offshore drilling, or domestic drilling stays in the US. People need to educate themselves before adhering to what they believe are informed opinions. The US is the 17th largest oil EXPORTER in the world today.

Spin it how you like. As of 2008, we still export almost a million and a half barrels of oil per day. My point, again put in simpler terms so you don't miss it, is that domestic oil isn't put into barrels marked for US consumption only. The fact that we (US) export over 16% as much oil in one day as Saudi Arabia may seem insignificant to you, but I doubt very many people in this country have a clue as to how much of domestic oil production leaves our borders.

Most of our oil comes from Canada and Mexico, but we still need to produce the lifeblood of commerce. If we were to drill in earnest, we could eliminate OPEC from our ledger in 10 years or so. Is Brazil, Russia or anyone else outside of us for that matter not taking their oil production opportunity seriously? Why are we so timid? [We likely can't talk about the answer to that question.]

And yes, I know oil is fungible [except in wartime].
