*** is next!!

I just had an annual check up and my blood test came back with a 10.4 A1C.........Whatever THAT is The nurse is scheduling me for another visit next week for more tests

How bad is that?? I hope I don't die between now and next week

Could this be responsible for me having less energy than usual?? I thought I was just getting old I do drink a lot of water during the day

I've already lost about 35lbs over the last two years and I don't eat JUNK food or deserts. I don't even drink soda anymore. I'm PISSED

I honestly don't know what I could do to change my lifestyle. I ride my bike almost every day and eat like an EFFING little bird. I've gone from 48 pants down to where my 42's are falling off my ass

Dude, I'm feelin' ya, I don't remember the number, but last Wednesday, my doc said something quite similar to me...basically, if I don't get my blood sugar down and post haste, I will be hit with the "D-word" diagnosis.

My wife threw out everything in the house with "sugar" or "high fructose corn syrup" on the label that afternoon....sigh....well, hopefully diet change will "fix" the problem for me, that coupled with more time walking and bicycling.

Gives us more time to work on the Cesar Millan stuff with our dogs at least!

It could have been much worse and you could have had it your entire life. Those glucose machines are 10 bucks at Wal-Mart. Buy one and test your blood sugar for a week and see what results you get. Those A1C tests can be all over the map, an 8 can be normal for one lab and an 8 can be high at another.

The A1C is a way to measure a person's average blood glucose level over the last couple months. They can be false high if you recently had a heart attack.

Having an ultra high blood sugar all the time will definitely make you feel tired and sluggish.

Bummer man.

My boss has Type II. He was telling me that his symptoms were basically the same as yours. He was drinking water like crazy and could never get rid of thirst, lost a bunch of weight without trying, etc.

Basically he takes a couple different types of Insulin and has everything in check. He has to watch what he eats and had to cut out soda, candy and what not.

Best of luck. Who knows maybe the next set of tests will come back and show up normal. But look on the bright side of things, it could always be worse. That's what I try to do, easier said than done though.

Just keep doing what you're doing. Chances are your body will catch up with itself. Eat healthy, exercise, and just be on top of it. It might dissipate, it might not, but it's manageable that's for sure.

I'll be meeting with a good friend and customer of mine next week who's been battling it for years. He has a computerized insulin pump thingy now. He'll be able to give me some pointers for sure. What a bunch of BS!!!

Wow! 10.4 is a very high HbA1c result. Normal is 5 or less. You start hitting over 6.3 in my neck of the woods and they start talking Metformin scripts.

I'd definitely want a redo before starting any kind of treatment.

Not to diminish things, but for type 2 diabetes, you could potentially get by with simple oral medications, which most physicians will start before starting insulin. The good news is that there is the potential to live a very healthy lifestyle and potentially recover without taking any medications. Unfortunately, this requires a very good diet, a lot of exercise, and some strict lifestyle modifications. Statistically, most are unwilling to adhere to the required lifestyle modifications.

I was just told that if I got it down to 7-7.5, I'd be doing wonderful.

Absolutely. As stated above, 5-6 is about normal. I usually hover around that number but I am a fanatic about taking care of myself. I exercise daily and do not eat crap of any sort! I have a buddy who was diagnosed last year and he lost well over 100lbs and is doing good as far as keeping the weight off and exercising but his sugar levels are always around 200. He just has to keep at it. He's a huge guy (6'6" 250+) although he slimmed down immensely! Have your blood pressure checked as that can cause sugar and AC1 levels to rise.

It's not always how much you eat but what you eat. Many people with diabetes can keep it in check with their diet alone.

Really sorry to hear this, its a growing epidemic.

My wife was diagnosed 4 years ago, and since then she has lost about 60 lbs and her highest A1C after the first 6 months was a 6.5. Control is very possible, and complications can be minimized.

get as much info as you can, and talk to your doctor. See if any of your local hospitals have a diabetes education class (often insurance will cover the cost, and many hospitals have reduced rates or even free classes if insurance doesn't cover it)

The ADA is a great place to start getting information about the diet, treatment and other topics.

Expect to start on oral meds (metformin, avandia, etc) and if they don't work after a few weeks, injectibles may be next.
Before staring insulin, you might want to ask your doc about Byetta It's an injectable that slows your digestion and helps your body lower blood sugar levels. It has been a great med for my wife.

Best of Luck
