Digging your own swimming pool - Anyone ever do it?

Sign in to disble this ad
My brother and I were kicking around the idea to dig a pool for my parents in their backyard.

We have access to heavy machinery (my brother is a fireman and knows people with equipment)

Anyone ever do it?

The only digging equipment I have access to is a shovel, so I've never even considered it as a possibility

You gotta have someplace to put the dirt that you take out of the hole.

depending on where you live some people will take the fill away for free, assuming they can use it.

Transporting dirt away takes a dump truck, which costs money - just something to keep in mind.
Check on permits and have all of the utilitys (also leach fields / septic systems) located before you start digging.
...And expect there to be some issue to deal with. Tree roots, construction backfill, big rocks, ect... There's always something when it comes to excavation.

It's not the hole that I would worry about, but what you do with the hole after you have it. You can't just pour concrete, you'll have to mold it somehow but i suck at anything related to concrete. Then I would assume that you'll either have to spray the concrete with something or line it with a liner. Since concrete is porous.

nortonrider is correct... dirt is expensive to haul away. I'll take it if you can get it to central IL

I would suggest an above ground pool then build a deck around it.

Screw concrete.
Use duct tape.
Just line the hole, and fill it.

This doesn't bode well...... I can see a new Mark Wilson only forum. It will start out ok, light banter, but a reply will be taken out of context, tempers will flair, and in the end Mark will have to ban himself

I say go for it.
Try to make it a suprise. Wait until they go away for a weekend and have at it.
Make sure to get a picture of the look on their faces when they return.
