Distortion pedal "bass synth"

Sign in to disble this ad
Does a distortion pedal sound like a synth? Are you tired of seeing distortion pedals marketed as having "synth-like" properties? Wouldn't you rather have a pedal track your notes and produce a bunch of different frequency-matched waveforms, rather than a metric assload of distortion?

Yeah distortion is cool, but oranges (distortion) are not the only fruit (sound). Sorry (bad metaphor).

And is the FreqBox the only way to produce genuine oscillator sounds?

Um, did you think you were in the effects forum?

As for the actual question, I haven't seen many distortions marketed as synthy, but I have seen it for a number of fuzzes. And since octaver-fuzz-filter gives a pretty convincing synth sound, I can understand that, but it does seem to come up in ad copy an awful lot these days.

That's exactly it. All fuzzes are now apparently "synth-like" by virtue of having huge gain. Perhaps they are - for people who want a synth that makes just one sound. Seems you can only really trust the boutique dudes who write their own copy.

I've got octavers and fuzzes and even named-as-such "Bass Synthesizer"s on my board but what I wouldn't give for a pure wave as a starting point...

Sunday, early hours:

It seems in my attempts to avoid cluttering the serious forums with frivolous threads, I have angered the natives of Off-Topic. Their language is similar to English, yet strangely difficult to decipher, and their customs are alien and somewhat frightening.

Will try appeasing them with cake tomorrow, if I remember when the hallucinogens wear off.

You better bring some cake! This is a serious forum, for non music related stuff.

This thread is getting better and better.

As for the fuzzes, it isn't huge gain that makes them "synthy", it's by virtue of them being "buzzy" for the most part. The only thing I like about seeing that description for a pedal is that it lets me know right away that it's not a fuzz that I want.

As for a bass synth pedal, you've heard about Chunk's Octavius Squeezer right?
