Do I need a custom cable?

Sign in to disble this ad
To run some speakers I have I want a cable that goes something like this:

male 1/8" stereo -> female 1/8" stereo
-> female 1/4" left (mono)
-> female 1/4" right (mono)

Do I need a custom cable?

Wait, why do you want the female bit in there?

You do not need a custom cable, you just need a 1/8" stereo to mono split Y cable. Hosa makes one. It's also super easy to DIY from a stereo 1/8" cable and a couple of mono 1/8" jacks.

The only other solution would be a mixer and I don't really want/need one seeing as already have a perfectly good audio interface. I have a male stereo 1/8" cable going to a full stereo system and two male 1/4" going to left and right speakers individually and to run everything together and still be able to pan between the left and right I need to get everything running through this cable I have in mind. The only other solution would be to run it through my interface but that would be a little annoying because every time I hook all my stuff up I'd have to go through the process of telling my computer to use the firewire port as the audio driver unless there's some sort of script to have it done automatically when the interface is detected.

I guess an alternative could be a cable that goes like this:

male 1/8" stereo -> female 1/8" stereo
-> female 1/4" stereo

quick question though. If you have a stereo cable that splits off to two mono signals is one the right and the other left or are they both stereo mixed to mono?

Right and left. I don't think a passive splitter is capable of downmixing each path to mono.

As far as what you're trying to do, you could grab a stereo splitter and daisy chain that to a 3.5mm to 1/4" cable (stereo, or split mono).

Is there some kind of diagram on how to do this? I feel like if I go the custom route it would be too expensive to warrant purchase, lol

To do this, grab a single 1/4" stereo to split mono cable, and one 1/8" to 1/4" adapter.

I personally have this one: http://www.amazon.com/Cables-Go-Ster.../dp/B000MDJU06

then I'd only have two mono signals. I need two mono signals and a stereo all coming from one 1/8" stereo jack

Oh. Then I shall propose this solution:

One male to twin female 1/8" -> Your 1/8" output
|
v
1/8" to 1/4" adapter
|
v
One male stereo to split mono 1/4"

Although, it has to be the same signal level all around. You will need more than a cable if you carry the signal, for example, to headphones on one side and to an amplifier on the other.

It ain't pretty but that should get the point across. Red are 3.5mm (1/8") and alien-green are 1/4".

Here's what you need:

I actually can get away with just the the last 2 I think. Does the stereo splitter split to two stereo signals or two mono?

Two stereo outputs.
