Do not install latest OSX 10.5.7 update....

If you use the HDMI connection for display.
It'll cause the Mac to see your display as a TV, and you will NOT be able to use your display's proper max resolution.
For example, I use 1900x1200.
That is now GONE!!
I now have 1900x1080. Everything looks stretched.
This is reported to Apple, but no fix for it.
This really sucks - I did not use Time Machine before the update. Crud!!!

I don't even know what mine is. I think it is 10.5 something, but I'm not sure. Lucky I don't use this feature anyway

Thanks for the heads up. I have it set and ready to install. I run this resolution also.

Do Macs use X11 to manage the display?

Did it. I'm a UNIX kernel and software engineer for 15 years, and I cannot make that software work. I gave that a shot. :-(
And the download is only good for a few days.
Plus....why the bloody **$%$* should I have to do something like that.
Apple should've had a fix for that out in about 30 minutes.
Anyhow, thanks for pointing that out - maybe someone else can make it work. But I would strongly advise against installing 10.5.7 and trying - unless you do a Time Machine backup first.

I remember an update to 10.4 about a year and a half ago, that disabled my USB sound card for a good two months. I ended up downloading a (huge) previous update and manually replacing suspicious drivers.

I hope I never have to do that again

Sure enough, two driver failures in the course of two years will have me buy a PC instead

After 5 or 6 reboots, I FINALLY got the new resolution in my list by using that 3rd party switchresX.
L-A, it's not the fact that the problem is caused. It's the fact that they (Apple) have no special fire under their butt to fix it. Screen resolution, I'm sure you'll agree, is a very critical thing to break. That should never have happened with any measure of regression testing. And if it gets missed, it should be fixed in next to no time.
I'm not going to buy a PC. I am a convert. However, I am certainly gun-shy now about trusting Apple to "just work" as it pretty much has in my 1-year Appleship.

That was the feeling I had been left with, back then. I know the Apple support guys at the store would be able to fix it "cleanly" for me if needed, but it really is the software dep's responsibility, and they are awfully slow at fixing specific problems of this kind.

Bummer. I have a year-old iMac that has 1680x1050 as it's highest resolution, so I guess I won't have that problem. I haven't downloaded the new .7 update yet either, but I don't think it's going to hurt me in this situation.

Indeed, I did, tongue-in-cheek. Is that a bad term? Not heard of it before. :-)

Lol.

I will not have this problem, as my MacBook is no longer my main computer, and has a semi-destructed graphics chip courtesy of Spore.

Don't let one isolated bug shatter your experience. I remember when a MacOS update killed networking, many years ago. Now that was a bug.

But perhaps a better lesson is: Don't be the first kid on the block to install an upgrade for any software that you depend on.
