To the Dog owners, do you allow your Dog to sleep with you in bed ? I usually do but after the recent move the first night I had him in bed with me he urinated on my comforter but he was fine last night. The only downside other then the Pup having an accident in the bed is at least my pup is an earlier riser then myself.

Animals are controlled by demonstrating that you are the alpha. Let it sleep in your bed a couple times, then it starts whining if you kick it out, and next thing you know, your dogs owns you. Not to mention it is, quite franky, unsanitary.

My dog knows whose boss, he get's a re-education whenever he acts out, and I kinda use letting him up on my bed as a type of reward thing for him if he's just done something good.
As a general rule though, no, I don't, what Crispy said, boundaries and dominance are where it's at for animals. My sister lets our 3 dogs do whatever they want most of the time, and as a result I'll go to wake her up in the morning and she'll have 3 dogs sleeping on her bed, and she'll be in the most awkward position I've ever seen.
tl;dr version, don't let him do it.

I keep him tightly disciplined the rest of the time, so this one luxury isn't enough to spur him to act out or think he could be the Alpha. Interestingly, after a half-hour or so of cuddling with me & the wife, he usually gets up and lays at the foot of the bed--so he knows his place. The only time he'll sleep on the bed all night is if it's hella cold out. Also, as far as being unsanitary, his breed (Portuguese water dog) has hair instead of fur, so we have to bathe him at least once a week anyway. |

| | Yeah, I've got the moves like Jagger. | | Join Date: Oct 2006 Location: G.R. MI | | | My dog (pug) sleeps in bed with my wife and I. She even sleeps under the covers. She only cuddles with my wife (I think I've rolled over on her before so she avoids me.) My wife appreciates the added warmth, and I have no personal problem with it either.
A large dog would be welcome to sleep on the floor in the bedroom, but a puglet is hardly noticeable.
If the bed wetting is an isolated incident, I don't see why your buddy can't sleep with you. If he's just a pisser, well........

If my wife's out of town I usually wake up to see the whole zoo (2 dogs, 2 cats) has taken over her spot.

She'll either be at the foot of the bed all night, or one of us has tossed her out of the room for making too much noise. When I get up to get ready for work I let her back in and she follows me around.

When we got him, I had just donated my kidney, and getting up with him in the middle of the night was a chore when your stomach has just been sliced open. I decided to throw him in bed with us one night, and he slept like a log the entire night. It's been that way ever since, in fact, he doesn't get up until I do.
As for the "pack leader" thing, I don't buy that letting your dog in your bed puts them above you at all. My dog is a licensed therapy dog, and he sleeps in the bed with no alpha issues.

I don't own a dog myself but if/when I did/do I doubt it'd sleep on the bed, since the two dogs I want are on the bigger end of the spectrum (Labrador Retriever or Canaan dog). My cat, however, does, since she's small enough to not interfere. |
