Do you ever send your SS# online

Sign in to disble this ad
In order to unlock online access to my bank account, they want me to submit my SS# online. I am not at all comfy with the idea. Anyone have any thoughts about this?

Are you sure the site is a legit bank site for your bank? Do they have certification of its security? I'd be very leery but have done it for a few accesses, depending upon the situation.

Yes it is a major bank that I have logged into once before. I got locked out and the customer service people say the only way to get back in is to unlock it myself online.

I have done it before, but am always very cautious about it. My mother needed my SS# while I was away on vacation. She asked for it via text, so I called her and told it to her, as I felt funny texting it.

They just use the same web page that I would use.

But if their computer is compromised it will be their fault when your whole life is stolen. If you're sleeping under a bridge you don't want it to be your own fault.

Call the bank and sort it out either in person or over the phone if it makes you uncomfortable.

I don't have a problem if it's a reputable site. I figure I have to give my SS to access my credit report and for things like pensions and IRA's, so doing it through your bank shouldn't be an issue.

What you don't want to do is every enter it after clicking on a link that you're emailed. You want to go to the site yourself. While on the topic of the phone too, you never want to give it if someone calls and asks for it. Most banks will say that they will never ask over the phone. Actually now that I've said that, they may not sort this for you over the phone if you don't want to do it on the site. You may have to go in and sort it in person.

You know this for fact? If so, why wouldn't you have done it there while confirming this? Most account managers have a better system access than a front-page website. I setup every facet of my online banking at the bank, and the site certainly wasn't the same as the commercial front-page.

If the bank is worth you trusting your money with them, then they should be happy to accomodate your concerns. Not like they're the only bank in town.

The only time I've given my SS number online was for financial aid and grant purposes. I'd do it at the bank so that way if something does go wrong they're liable and you're not up the creek without a paddle.

I sat at the desk some weeks ago and it sure appeared to be the same interface. Again, I am talking about unlocking my online access, which just got screwed up, not doing things to my account from the banker's terminal. These appear to be separate functionality. For that matter, I have been told that the account function I need to perform can only be initiated online by the account holder.

I will talk to the manager yet again but it seems to be useless.

Change banks man. Never type your SS number over a computer.

I don't have an issue with this over a secure website. My network is secure as well as the website, I'll do it.

This. Just check the security certificate to make sure everything looks correct and that they use proper strength encryption (128 bit or higher).

I took care of the immediate crisis by using another account. Means funds are not distributed the way I would like but at least people will get paid.

Not sure what I will do about the account in question. I will call my branch again tomorrow.

Yes I have seen this before. It's a verification process. Yes I have sent my SS online. I also did that when I got a credit card.

Even if you are on a secure website like a bank, you are vulnerable. You can be keystroked by a million different 13 year old hackers.
