Question Do you give him the rope ?

Sign in to disble this ad
A hypothetical moral question.

Pretend you work in a hardware store and one day a disheveled but well spoken man comes in comes up to you asking for the strongest rope you have then he begins to share with you his life story. For the past three years he has battled Heroin addiction after the death of his whole family when on a road trip a bridge collapsed killing all but him in the car. He had experimented with heroin a few times in college to settle his nerves while preparing for exams and defenses and in the aftermath of his family’s death it found its way back into his life. He was a very well known and liked Professor coming up for tenor until he lost his appointment due to his continued self destructiveness and unprofessional behavior from the addiction. In the struggle of heroin addiction he contracted HIV and it has progressed rapidly to full blown aids. He has lost his home and all of his savings and has been homeless for nearly 2 years. He has destroyed his life and now Aids will destroy what’s left of it. He now tells you he can not bear another winter being homeless and that he plans to hang himself tonight. He has no money and asks you to give him a five foot piece of this rope, out of pity do you give it to him ?

No. As much as I would pity him, I could not in good conscience participate in ending his life.

I would talk to him I guess. Hell I'd probably offer him a roof over his head but if he were intent on taking his life then in all honesty I would give him the rope. I support euthanasia and don't see how this would be much different if he were of sound mind.

I couldn't. Even with a sob story as bad as that, human life is too valuable. I would have no part in that ordeal.

I'd even throw in a boyscout manual and turn the corner of the page by the knot tying section.

holy cow what a difficult scenario, where do you come up with this stuff?

I would give the guy a hug, hand him whatever cash I had in my wallet and walk away.

See, I would be worried because when I watch CSI, they always seem to be able to trace things back to the point of purchase. So its likely the cops would find out it came from my shop. Now, I could probably claim that he stole it, but then if my boss found out that I wasn't watching the store properly I might get fired. OTOH if I gave it to him and admitted it, I could be implicated in assisting a suicide. I could lose my job then, or worse get convicted.

Honestly, if he really wanted it I would say that I was going out the back to get some stuff and I'd ask him to "leave" while I was gone. if its gone when I get back, I'll assume he stole it. If its not, then its his decision to keep persevering.

"...don't see how this would be much different if he were of sound mind."

Because the motherf***er is so stupid, he'll probably end up blowing the attempt and then suing you because he ended up a paraplegic.

The little brown eel comes out of the cave... Swims into the hole... Comes out of the hole... Goes back into the cave again...

What if he were disheveled and inarticulate? Or a woman? Would those variables significantly change the morality in question here?

I'd give him the rope and show him how to make a noose.

Hell no, he could never manage it with only five feet of rope.

no, i will not aid his death. if he really wants to he can go jump off a building or something, and im not supporting that decision or being cold hearted, but i would not have any part of helping him end his life.

+1, didnt see this one till just now. the noose alone would take more than 5 feet i feel like. plus some length to hang from and enough for a neck loop, never.

I'd tell him I only sell rope by the yard and no freebies.
