It's always amazed me how people with internet access seem not to know how to do the simplest of things. It seems to never occur to people (at least where I live) to "google it." Virtually everything I know about computers and all manner of random non-scholarly subjects has come from the internet usually in the pursuit of something totally unrelated, lol. If I don't know something I don't ask a friend or family unless I'm fairly sure they'll provide an accurate answer, I go straight to google and match sources. If sources A, B and C all point to answer X then in all likelihood that's the answer. I've used this to do everything from running my iTunes Library wirelessly from an external drive to hacking my PSP, to modifying my bass guitars.
A perfect example: I love my Mom & Dad to death and wouldn't be who I am or where I am today without them but is it that difficult to google how to sync your ipod to your itunes library, lol? Between me and my brother we've shown the two of them how to do it at least 10 times total and I still don't think they get it. I'm a firm believer in "Those who can do, google!" (with exceptions of course) and that's definitely one of those situations. I thought at some point the idea to figure it out own their own would occur to them but it hasn't. Of course, that's only one example but I could post many more.
I'm not frustrated or anything, it's kinda fun helping my parents but it's interesting that we have such different attitudes towards trying to learn certain things. It's not just my parents either, it's my brother, my friends, and people I barely even know. With the exception of the last one they are generally all intelligent people. What do you guys think?

I always check Google if I'm not sure of a site's URL. I never use Bing, anything that's named after a bing cherry or Bing Crosby can't be any good!

and i run into people very regularly that want info and don't seem to like the answer, "google it!"
now back when i was a kid..... ya see we didn't have the interweb. information was a cherished commodity. if you had knowledge of something, you held on to it. seriously though, i am still tickled by the idea that i can gain any bit of trivial knowledge in seconds with google. it gives me a thrill. used to be phone books and reference books and newspapers and the local library, etc.
on the other hand, there is so much "info" out there that now, you really need to consider the source.

What ever you do.
DO NOT GOOGLE IMAGE SEARCH BLUE WAFFLE.
Seems innocent enough. Don't be fooled.

Mail... nothing special there. Gtalk... just another run of the mill IM client. Searches are still good though... especially for image searches.

I'm with you in that I always manage to find what I want through the internet - but then I am a trained information management professional - I have actually held the job title "Knowledge Management Manager"!
I think you have to realise that there are different types of people who just don't see the world in the same way and there are many systems for classifying types of people by their personality, like Belbin : http://www.belbin.com/rte.asp?id=179
So I find that certain types of people are happy with searching for information through online systems - but others who are often extraverts, only live through their conversations with other people.
This is good for society as we need different people to build successful teams - there will be extraverts talking to people, motivating them and there will be introverts sitting in a corner, searching google to find the information needed to back up the decision making process!
So you can see in Politics - you need somebody who stand up and talks , who makes decisions quickly - but they are backed up by teams of researchers and advisors, who do all that stuff that leaders don't do so well!
To some people - hard information in written form is dry and dull - they want to talk to other people and only value what they learn through talking...?
Different strokes...?
